IUP Values Me
Tatiana is a junior nursing major and Cook Honors College student who will graduate in 2024. She is both a Promising Scholar and a Sutton Scholar and is a member of the women’s ice hockey team. Tatiana is a writer, an editor, and the current vice president of Her Campus, a student organization that produces an online magazine written by college women for college women. She is a member and past vice president of the Latino Student Organization (LaSO), a group she joined because of her pride in her Costa Rican culture and identity. Through LaSO, she organized last year’s Latin Dance Night. Tatiana studied abroad in Costa Rica this past summer, and her coursework focused on medical Spanish. Through this experience, she connected with students from across the United States, improved her Spanish, and built toward her future career in nursing. By being better equipped with medical translation, she plans to address the language barrier in health care. We thank you, Tatiana!
Hilario is an assistant professor in the Department of Sociology and a faculty member for the Sustainability Studies Minor. Some of his research and teaching interests include socio-demography, the role of race in the transformation of American society, the sociology of aging, and social and cultural change. He is a MARTI (Mid-Atlantic Research and Training Institute) research associate and has published work on global Latino issues, including migratory workers, migration, and immigration. His students engage in critical discourse about inequality and the global community, and he “embraces social justice in practice that empowers students to become innovative leaders while enhancing communities throughout the world.” Hilario is a member of the Hispanic Heritage Council and the President’s Commission on Diversity and Inclusion. He gives presentations on a variety of topics to the IUP community, including this week’s Lunch & Learn (see details below). We thank you, Hilario!
A note about IUP Values Me: Each week, we will highlight one student and one staff member to “shine a spotlight” on their leadership and involvement in campus programs and their great work assisting our campus community with diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and/or civil rights awareness. If you have a suggestion for an IUP community member to feature in this section, please email social-equity@iup.edu.
