Principal | ConferencesMartin Luther King Walk | LeviesCOVID Testing at BISD

Dear Ordway Families,

This Thursday, the Bainbridge Island School Board will be reviewing the Reopening Plan timeline and COVID19 metrics to determine if plans to move forward with in-person learning for K-1 students on January 25th and 2-4 students January 27th will be initiated. Additionally, school board members and the superintendent will be available to share information and answer questions about reopening plans at a Community Conversation (via Zoom) January 21st at 5 p.m. (Look for the Community Conversation zoom link at the BISD website.)

The Ordway staff and I understand that the transition from remote to in-person learning is like the start of the school year when it comes to students learning about daily operations and safety protocols. We have created an Ordway Hybrid Handbook for families to review prior to this change that will be shared prior to conferences. We would also like to encourage in-person Hybrid Model Kindergarten and new to Ordway families, to sign up for a brief Arrival Orientation Tour scheduled for Friday, January 22nd. More details will be sent to families via email so please plan to sign up for a tour time on that date.

As the first half of the school year comes to a close,  I am thankful for the community we have fostered. The many relationships that have bloomed between families, students, and staff with our school mission of ‘caring to learn, learning to care’ could not be more important with the current events taking place locally and nationally that are outside of our control. We all have a role in the outcomes for our children as they grow to be contributing members of our society.  We as a community have the power to decide what the focus for that will be.

At Ordway we value an inclusive, safe, respectful, and positive learning community for all. Some teachers shared a book last week to help students learn what to do if they feel scared. The book suggestion from our Equity Administrator, Jill Phillips, titled Come With Me by Holly McGhee is a resource we can recommend for children of all ages. The message is simple but poignant: We can empower our children by modeling what we say matters, there are many actions we can take to build each other up, and taking care of one another is not only good for those who are helped, but for the helpers too! May the cycle of caring continue and may love overcome hate, today and always.
Kind Regards,
Melinda Reynvaan

COVID TESTING AT BISD

BISD is one of a handful of school districts in Washington to be selected to participate in a COVID-19 testing pilot program

— a partnership between the Department of Health and the Gates Foundation. This is a state-funded pilot for voluntary COVID-19 screening and testing that will help contain the virus, protect our communities, open up opportunities for in-person learning, and keep students and teachers healthy and safe.

The testing helps BISD add a layer of COVID-19 prevention as we transition from remote learning to in-person learning.  A few important things to know:

Testing takes place during school days at the District Office, 8489 Madison Ave. N, between Ordway Elementary and the Aquatic Center.

Testing is available for any BISD student who is exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19. Student Scheduling
Reservations for the test are required. We will be unable to accommodate unscheduled individuals.

There is no cost for the test. Your health insurance may be billed, but by law, the insurance company may not charge any co-pay, deductible, or out-of-pocket expense for the test. The Department of Health will cover the cost of the test if you do not have health insurance.

The test is a self-administered cheek-swab test that is similar to brushing your teeth.

BISD staff and community volunteers oversee the testing site and provide you with the test, instructions and monitor the process.

Test results will be available 36-48 hours after the test (or 24 hours after the test arrives at the lab).
