Instructional Technology Workshops

The Center for Teaching will be offering a variety of workshops on specific teaching technologies. If you are new to using Brightspace, be sure to check out the Beginner's Guide to Brightspace! If you plan to use other tools such as TopHat, Gradescope, or Perusall, we have workshops lined up for those tools as well! Check out the Brightspace workshops page for up-to-date information and registration links.

Teaching Assistant Orientation

To assist new TAs as they prepare for their duties, the Vanderbilt University Center for Teaching offers its Teaching Assistant Orientation (TAO) each August. Sessions at the orientation offer effective strategies for the varied teaching duties assumed by TAs and provide information on campus resources available to TAs. Participants at TAO also receive an opportunity to practice their teaching skills and receive feedback on their teaching from experienced teachers.

TAO will be held remotely and will include a mix of synchronous and asynchronous activities spread across three days. See our orientation page for more information.

All Skate: Active Learning in the University Classroom

How can we make the most of the relatively limited time we have with our students during class?  Educational research is clear: engaging students in active learning in the classroom leads to improved learning outcomes over “continuous exposition by the teacher.”  But what is active learning?  Why does it work?  And how can we engage all of our students in active learning during class?  In this session, we’ll explore teaching strategies, learning principles, and digital technologies for creating active learning environments in our classrooms—and inviting all our students into deeper learning.

Facilitator: Derek Bruff, assistant provost and executive director, Center for Teaching

The orientation features an introduction to strategies for launching a successful teaching career at Vanderbilt, with concurrent sessions on a variety of practical topics. Teaching at Vanderbilt is an opportunity for new faculty to meet each other and to learn how the Center for Teaching can support them throughout their Vanderbilt careers. See our orientation page for details.

Inclusive Teaching Strategies

If you are interested in improving your inclusive teaching strategies, this workshop will provide an introduction to some of the foundational principles and practices of inclusive teaching.  Inclusive teaching is that which supports all students in their efforts to find greater belonging, equity, and trust in a course’s learning community.  Inclusive teaching is predicated upon thinking through the barriers to inclusion as they affect our teaching and what may be done to overcome them.  Using case vignettes, this workshop will give participants the opportunity to explore practices of inclusive teaching that can improve their courses by engaging wider range of voices and viewpoints, by creating greater accessibility in activities and assessments, by supporting classroom civility and productive conflict, and by fostering a culture of collaboration and empowerment with students that encourages deep learning and critical thought.
