The month of February is one of the busiest months of the year for faculty participation in our workshops, and we are offering something for everyone. You can and find more information on the CTL's Global Awareness, and Teaching Effectiveness workshops, as well as all of the workshops offered by our Points Partners.
As always, in CTL workshops, you learn about the art and science of teaching, meet great faculty from around campus, and earn 10,000 points towards a CTL certificate. We look forward to seeing you at the UAB Center for Teaching and Learning during the month of February.
Scott L. Phillips, Ph.D.

Global Awareness Workshop Series |
|
|
Have you ever struggled to understand accented English? Have you ever been puzzled in a conversation with an international student, wondering why a student wasn’t answering your question with a clear “yes” or “no”? Have you tried to communicate as clearly as possible with your multilingual English speaking students and wondered how to improve on your efforts? If so, the new workshop in the Global Awareness series is for you. Dr. Melissa Hawkins, the CTL’s International Teaching and Learning Specialist, will facilitate Communicating Across Cultures and Languages on Friday, February 3, from 11:30 AM-1 PM. Among other topics, Dr. Hawkins will discuss the different ways that those who come from cultures characterized by indirect communication patterns convey a negative response.

In addition, on Thursday, February 16, from 11:30 AM-1PM, Dr. Hawkins will lead the workshop Exploring UAB International Student Backgrounds, which will delve into the educational cultures of China, India, and South Korea. Finally, Dr. Michelle Allen with the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion will present a double-header at the end of the month (and the beginning of March) offering Bystander Intervention on Tuesday, February 28, from 11:30 AM-1 PM (followed by Safe Zone on Wednesday, March 1, from 11:30 AM-1:30 PM).

Each semester the Center for Teaching and Learning offers dozens of workshops on various topics to help you with your teaching. CTL workshops are full of great ideas, tips, and tricks that can help you make your teaching more effective, your classes more interactive, and your students more engaged.
Recently, we started recording some tips from our workshops in short videos posted to our Instagram page and archived on our website. To see the tips when they are released, follow @UABCTL on Instagram or go to our website to view the archives. New tips will be recorded and archived throughout the semester.

Attending Faculty Workshops at the CTL |
|
|
Be sure to Register!
All CTL workshops are in-person events for UAB faculty members. Registration is easy and is strongly encouraged, especially for events where catering is provided. Register only for those CTL events you plan to attend, and if your plans change after you have registered, please let us know. You may participate in a workshop without registering, but we ask that if food is being served, you wait until all registered attendees have been served before serving yourself.

Getting to the CTL:
The UAB Center for Teaching and Learning is located on the 4th floor of Lister Hill Library. The space, formerly known as “The Edge of Chaos,” is now the new Center for Teaching and Learning. While no longer in use as an event venue for rent, it is the perfect space for faculty professional development activities, faculty meetings, committee meetings, day retreats, and other faculty gatherings between the hours of 8 AM-5 PM. Think of the new CTL as UAB’s faculty lounge. When attending faculty events at the CTL, use your one card in the LHL elevators to access the 4th floor, follow the signs pointing you in the right direction when you exit the elevator, and don't forget to sign in to the workshops you attend.
