We are pleased to help you begin your Spring semester successfully with a full slate of workshops for teachers. You can view details of our upcoming events on our website and on the University Calendar. As always, in CTL workshops, you learn about the art and science of teaching, meet great faculty from around campus, and earn 10,000 points towards a CTL certificate.
The beginning of the semester is also a great time to check out the Teaching Resources page on our website where you will find helpful information on how to provide your students with the best resources and learning experiences possible. Read below to learn more about our classroom technology days and how to follow us on Instagram to get all of our 2-minute teaching tips as soon as they are released.
Happy New Year, and we can’t wait to see you this spring at the CTL! Scott L. Phillips, Ph.D.

Global Awareness Workshop Series |
|
|
As we welcome this new year with all of its promise and opportunity, consider expanding your skill set in working with UAB’s diverse student population in your plans for the month.

|
First up in January, Dr. Melissa Hawkins will lead the workshop Please Talk! Promoting Class Participation on Thursday, January 5, from 11:30 AM-1 PM. This idea-packed workshop explores multiple ways to engage all students in classroom interaction. In addition, on Tuesday, January 17, from 11:30 AM-1 PM, Melissa will facilitate the workshop Helping International Students Avoid Plagiarism. Plagiarism is a complicated concept when it comes to studying abroad, since some academic cultures have different notions of what constitutes source misuse and cheating. In this workshop, learn techniques to encourage all of your students in their correct use of sources and academic integrity.
Finally, Dr. Michelle Allen from the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion will lead Cultural Awareness Building Blocks on Wednesday, January 25, from 11:30 AM-1 PM, which teaches foundational concepts for working in diverse contexts.
All of this month’s workshops will count towards helping you earn your Global Awareness certificate. Please join us!

Each semester the Center for Teaching and Learning offers dozens of workshops on various topics to help you with your teaching. CTL workshops are full of great ideas, tips, and tricks that can help you make your teaching more effective, your classes more interactive, and your students more engaged.
Recently, we started recording some tips from our workshops in short videos posted to our Instagram page and archived on our website. To see the tips when they are released, follow @UABCTL on Instagram or go to our website to view the archives. New tips will be recorded and archived throughout the semester.

Classroom Technology Information and Demonstrations |
|
|
Join us in the atrium on the 4th floor of Lister Hill Library*, the new home for the UAB CTL. Demonstration times/days are listed below. Registration is not required—just show up during the times below to participate.
|
*All UAB faculty must scan their OneCard in the Lister Hill Library elevator to access the 4th floor. The atrium is to the left after exiting the elevator. If you are unable to attend one of these sessions, you can always call 205-996-9999 (6-9999 on campus) to schedule an individual appointment with a UAB IT technician.
IMPORTANT: Before showing up for an in-person demonstration, all faculty should first watch UAB eLearning's interactive classroom technology video tutorial and visit UAB eLearning's lecture capture website to learn more about the technology and to search for the specific classroom in which you are teaching to verify that it is managed by UAB IT.

Attending Faculty Workshops at the CTL |
|
|
Be sure to Register!
All CTL workshops are in-person events for UAB faculty members. Registration is easy and is strongly encouraged, especially for events where catering is provided. Register only for those CTL events you plan to attend, and if your plans change after you have registered, please let us know. You may participate in a workshop without registering, but we ask that if food is being served, you wait until all registered attendees have been served before serving yourself.

Getting to the CTL:
The UAB Center for Teaching and Learning is located on the 4th floor of Lister Hill Library. The space, formerly known as “The Edge of Chaos,” is now the new Center for Teaching and Learning. While no longer in use as an event venue for rent, it is the perfect space for faculty professional development activities, faculty meetings, committee meetings, day retreats, and other faculty gatherings between the hours of 8 AM-5 PM. Think of the new CTL as UAB’s faculty lounge. When attending faculty events at the CTL, use your one card in the LHL elevators to access the 4th floor, follow the signs pointing you in the right direction when you exit the elevator, and don't forget to sign in to the workshops you attend.
