Chris Smith, Latrelle's/Stumptown Coffee Roasters
Warm Words, Hot Coffee: Serving Up Exceptional Customer Service
PDX People Quarterly Award nominee Chris Smith shows how taking on new responsibilities provides an opportunity to shine. Ebony Plamodon, his manager at Latrelle's/Stumptown Coffee Roasters, spills the beans on how Chris provides exemplary customer service while wearing his face covering for safety: “His demeanor is gracious and his tone of voice shows he has a smile under his mask.”
Ebony continued to pour on the praise, sharing that Chris is a wonderful team player with excellent customer service. "Previously, he took care of our deliveries and stocking needs and only worked in the café when needed. But recently he has been in the café much more…and he has been an absolute star," she said. "He always makes sure the guests leave with what they need to make their trip just a little brighter! Not only does he improve our customers’ days, he makes his coworkers’ days better too – he is proactive, often doing tasks before being asked.”
To recognize those airport employees that truly stand out as extraordinary, we host the PDX People customer service awards each quarter. The virtual awards ceremony was held on Tuesday, Oct. 27, but if you couldn't watch in real time, don't worry! You can watch the recording now or read about the winners on the PDX employee website.

TSA Recognizes PDX Team with National Awards
The Transportation Security Administration recently announced that two employees based at PDX received top agency honors for excellence.
TSA Federal Security Director for Oregon Stephen Taber is the recipient of the Federal Security Director of the Year award. He was recognized for skillfully leading Team Oregon through a challenging year that included keeping the traveling public healthy and secure during the spread of COVID-19. He's also known as a leader who seeks feedback from employees and encourages innovation. Despite being evacuated from his home due to the Oregon wildfires, he came to work at PDX every day to support the TSA team.
TSA Officer Naomi Eckstine was named Passenger Support Specialist of the Year. She was recognized for providing exemplary and unparalleled service to travelers who require special accommodations or are concerned about the security screening process. She also initiated a “Better to Best” training for other TSA employees to encourage top-notch customer service to travelers. Learn more about Stephen and Naomi in the TSA press release.
Congratulations, Stephen and Naomi! We're proud to have you as part of our PDX People family.

Models Show the Future of PDX in Miniature
If you thought the image above was just another PDX Next rendering, that's understandable. But the truth is, it's not. Instead, it's part of an architectural model that's about 20 by 30 feet big – each half-inch equals one foot – and provides a tangible look at the airport of the future, right down to the undulating wooden roof.
Those models are largely the handiwork of second-generation model maker Talisa Shevavesh –along with numerous design teams, high-tech machining equipment and even a few model-making robots. This latest model is perhaps their most extraordinary, with a woven wooden roof spanning an interior filled with “greenery” and plastic “travelers.” It was the perfect pandemic project for Talisa and her team, as it took months of painstaking work to design and build PDX in miniature.
If you're interested in learning more about this fascinating process, check out this interview with Talisa and ZGF partner Gene Sandoval where they discuss the ins and outs of physically building, and rebuilding, the massive model; how the process influences their design decisions; and how one becomes a model maker in the first place.

Happy Holidays From the Port of Portland

As an extended part of the Port of Portland family, we wish you the happiest of holidays! The colorful illustrations in this digital card came from Port of Portland senior designer Steve Cowden, known for putting his sketchpad to good use for projects including our Travel Safe campaign. The words that make up the iconic Portland landmarks – including KOIN Tower, Union Station and the OHSU tram – stemmed from a brainstorm for the #PDXLove post-it installation and highlight strength, gratitude, community, compassion and courage. The background music also has a PDX connection – the song is "In a Daze" performed by volunteer musician Anthony Cadiz.
