Middle School Family Night

TONIGHT! Begins at 6:00 PM on Zoom

The evening provides Middle School families with an opportunity to meet their child’s advisor and classroom teachers, to learn about course expectations and goals, and to ask questions. The evening will begin at 6:00 p.m. with each advisor hosting a 15-minute introduction for their advisees and their families. “Classroom” visits with individual teachers will continue until 7:40 p.m.

SARS-CoV-2 Testing Round 2 Results

Our second round of testing yielded no positive tests among our students and staff. Distance, face coverings, and handwashing seem to be effective so far. Keep up the good work! Day families, as we see increased positive tests in the area, please be especially vigilant about your child's off-campus activities.

Next Phase: Random Surveillance Testing

Tomorrow, Thursday, Sept. 10, we will begin randomly selecting members of our community to be tested each week. We will be testing across the following categories: Boarding Students, Residential Faculty, Day Students, and Day Faculty & Staff. If your child is chosen to be tested, they will receive an email from Mr. Monahan by Tuesday afternoon with a reminder about testing procedures. If and when they are selected, testing is mandatory. All testing will take place at the Health Center beginning at 3:15 p.m. NOTE: If you are concerned that an activity your child was engaged in may have increased their exposure, please contact Mr. Monahan to give him the option to place your child on that week's testing list. Testing is NOT a replacement for quarantine if you have received notification of positive or likely exposure.

The 4-County Active Case Rate

As of Tuesday, the seven-day average active case rate is .34%*. A seven-day average active case rate of .5% or above would trigger a move to online learning for all classes.
*On Sept. 3, the Tennessee Department of Health changed its tracking methodology. We are currently evaluating our metrics to adjust to this change.

When Can Parents See Grades?

As a matter of educational philosophy, SAS does not keep grade books perpetually open to parents. However, eight times a year you will have access to your child's grades and assessments.

Mid-Quarter is Friday

On Friday, we will have reached the middle of our first quarter.

Middle School Access

On Monday, Sept. 14, parents of students in middle school classes will be provided access to a Middle School Progress Report.

Upper School Access

Parents of students in upper school classes will be provided access to their child’s course grade detail on Saturday, Sept. 12 through Wednesday, Sept. 16.
Instructions on accessing grade reports are available on the Parent Essentials page.

Tips on Using Core

Creating PDFs for CORE

CORE allows teachers to annotate PDF, Word, and PowerPoint files, but first, the student needs to upload their work as a PDF file.
Here's how:
Have a file on a device (an image such as .jpg or Google Docs file)?
Use the PRINT button to save your work as a .pdf. This is particularly useful for students who have Chromebooks and no cell phone.
Have an iPhone?
You can use a SCANNER app OR the built-in NOTES app and the phone's camera.
Have an Android phone?
Use the GOOGLE DRIVE app and the phone's camera to scan images.
Have a CORE question? Send it to Educational Technology Coordinator Dr. Viva Reynolds.

Upper School & Boarding Family Weekend

SEP 25-27 Virtual

The bad news is that due to the pandemic Upper School and Boarding Family Weekend will be virtual this year. The good news is that even our international families will be able to attend! We'll have details for you soon, but plan on joining us Friday night from 7-9 p.m. for a brief welcome and state-of-the-school address by Head of School Karl J. Sjolund followed by a student leadership Q&A. Our boarding families will want to tune in for a report on residential life. We'll end the evening with a special Friday night Creative Expression Assembly (no assembly required!) showcasing our student talent. Saturday morning from 9-11 a.m. you'll enjoy an online class walk-through tailored to your child's schedule. After the walk-through, faculty, coaches, and residential parents will be available for virtual office hours. Saturday night from 7-8 p.m. we hope you'll join us for Family Game Night. The weekend ends Sunday evening at 7 p.m. as we invite you to wind down and prepare for Monday the way our boarders do with our evening Compline service.

Have a Young Driver?

  • All cars that will be brought to campus must be registered with the Assistant to the Academic Administrators.
  • Seniors and proctors may park in the Wade Hall parking lot and only past room #25 in Simmonds Hall moving towards Fire Tower Road.
  • All other cars must be parked in the gym parking lot.
  • Cars cannot be moved from one parking lot to another.
See more info about driving rules and privileges in the Handbook.

Join Us for Chapel

We live Zoom our Chapel every Wednesday at 12:45 p.m., and you are welcome to join us! Click on this link. If it asks for a password type in "&alsowyou" (see what we did there?). The link will stay the same week-to-week so save it for future use. We'll also include it in our weekly calendar below.

Your SAS/COVID-19 Questions Answered

We seem to be having a great run of luck. Have there really been no positives?

There is certainly luck involved, but our students have been great on campus about staying masked, distanced, etc. That said, we have had faculty and students who have had to quarantine due to secondary exposures off our campus, and we remain concerned as new case rates in the area are on an upswing. It is important for everyone to remember that it is because of the care that you are taking that we have been able to keep our community safe and healthy. Keep up the good (and hard, we know!) work.

On September 3, the Tennessee Department of Health changed how it's reporting active cases. Is SAS changing the metric it will be tracking?

The Tennessee Department of Health is now removing people from the active case numbers 14 days after they are reported, even if there is no confirmation that they are now better. This is intended to more closely align with what is now understood about the infectious period of COVID-19. This resulted in a major shift downward in the number of active cases reported. SAS is reviewing the metrics we are using to see if we need to revise either the data we are tracking or the active case number which would cause us to go online. In the meantime, we continue to track positive test rates and hospitalization rates in addition to the active case rate.
