The History of the BHS Contest & Judging System

Join Kevin Keller on a journey through BHS contest and judging history. Each episode of this 11-part video series is approximately one hour long, with new episodes releasing every few weeks over the coming months.

Part 4: The Calm Before the Storm - 1961-1970

We examine the rules and policies of the 1960’s. Although there is never a period within the history of C&J that is calm, we actually find some stability before the changes that will happen in the 1970’s. We learn about the trends and issues that led to the most restrictive time of defining the barbershop style.

Member Center Upgrades will make it easier to Barbershop your way!

For a few months now, we’ve been talking about the enhancements we’re making to Member Center to help make it easier for you to “barbershop your way.”
Some of the improvements are specifically for our leaders of chapters and singing communities, to help you manage the business of barbershop. Other enhancements are for all barbershoppers -- and hopefully will make it easier to welcome even more people to the joy of singing barbershop harmony!

Put a Tag on 2020!

Some of the Society's best performers, arrangers, and directors are helping us get in the spirit, writing one-of-a-kind tags for 2020 and sharing inspiring stories. Here are a few highlights!

The Quin-Tones share a gift

Watch the Quin-Tones sing "Share the Gift of Song" composed by Patrick McAlexander. Open the sheet music here, and sing along!

Elizabeth Davies 'puts a Tag on 2020' and shares how BHS makes an impact

"Watching Marty navigate the treacherous waters of 2020 with total candor, grace, compassion, and unwavering energy has challenged me to dig deep when musical leadership felt impossible. It's hard to whine too loudly about the challenges of rowing the lifeboat when Marty is right there, shouting encouragement, laughing his hyena laugh and offering to take over the oars for anyone who is tired. Looking forward to brighter days and ringing chords ahead."

We'd love to hear YOUR story!

We invite the entire BHS community -- everyone -- to come together and show your support for BHS as you consider your end-of-year giving, and also share one example of how you’ve been impacted by BHS or BHS programs. This is our collective opportunity to come together, hear each other’s stories, and recognize the variety of ways we’ve all been touched by BHS programs. You can share your personal example, and then invite others to tell theirs...and so on. Together, let's ‘Put a Tag on 2020.’

Submission deadline extended!

Deadline to sign up to volunteer is Sunday, January 10, 2021.

Update: Inclusive Music Review Process

In recent years, BHS has been assessing and removing music from our catalog that was deemed racially and culturally insensitive. After our own review and additional feedback from members and Marketplace customers, nearly 100 problematic titles are no longer available to purchase from the BHS Harmony Marketplace and have been archived in the BHS Old Songs Library.

Next Steps

We are currently establishing a review panel of staff and volunteer leaders from the barbershop community and a process they will use to review music that has been identified as potentially problematic. They will be assessing the music based on a number of criteria including themes, language, and historical context. More information about this process and the review criteria will be available in early 2021.
In Spring of 2021, BHS is planning to implement a process where individuals may submit titles for review by the panel on a quarterly basis. We are excited about this progress and remain committed to providing inclusive music that aligns with our vision of Everyone in Harmony. To learn more about inclusion and barbershop music, watch our October Inclusion Panel Session on Background of Music: History, Research, & Choosing Non-Problematic Music.

Barbershop Live @ Home makes a great holiday week chapter meeting

Many chapters take some time off at the end of December. Rather than turn off all the lights, consider sharing the prerecorded second edition of Barbershop Live @ Home, the virtual chapter meeting for everyone

We've put the entire event from December 6 online, so you can experience the full varied programming, including vocal warmups with Katy Dane, Vocal Coaching under Glass with Dr. Phillip Grant, Clay Hine teaching his song "It's The Music That Brings Us Together," Rob Mance on Painting Phrases with Tonal Color, Jake Tickner creating Tags, plus trivia, tech tips, and a never-before-seen video from FRED!

Share with your chapter for individual watching, or have a Zoom meeting and view all together.

Project Connect Expands in 2021

In 2020, Project Connect allowed us to bring new members into our barbershop world even when we couldn’t physically meet together. Through it, we’ve offered discounts to new members experiencing the joy of barbershop harmony for the first time and “person of note” referral discounts for our current members. And yes, we did have new members join in the past year... more than a quarter were brand new members to BHS!  We believe that this shows the tremendous strength of the barbershop community in the face of unprecedented and unimaginable challenges.

As we turn the page on a New Year, the quarantine has continued longer than any of us imagined and the need for support and assistance remains. So, we’re continuing and expanding Project Connect. In addition to extending our current offerings through 2021, we’re also allowing members with financial hardship to access new discounts when renewing their BHS membership.

We would rather have our members remain with their chapter and the BHS community, giving their time and talents to their local chorus, than leave the wonderful barbershop community altogether, especially during this time when we need each other most. We look forward to 2021 with hope and anticipation of eventually being able to safely gather once again.

For those at risk of not renewing their membership due to a financial hardship, this option will be available starting in January for 2021 renewals. Check back here for all the latest updates on Project Connect as they are made available.
