Preliminary Study Results on the Safety of Singing

American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS), Performing Arts Medicine Association (PAMA), Chorus America, and the Barbershop Harmony Society presented a joint Q&A-style webinar with study researcher Dr. Jelena Srebric (reviewing the preliminary findings for singers), otolaryngologist Dr. Lucinda Halstead (with a review of mask options), and soprano Olivia Lerwick (describing her participation in the research study) on Monday, August 10, 2020.

Building a Singing Community While Social Distancing

GUEST BLOG : Manoj Padki

In the thick of COVID-19 social distancing, long-time Barbershopper Manoj Padki got an email from a neighbor, asking if there was a way to create an opportunity for their community to sing safely together. The result: a regular therapeutic outlet for folks who aren’t regular barbershoppers!
It all started with an email from a neighbor, Beezy, on Friday, March 20: “Hey Manoj, What would you think about leading some ‘porch sings’ on the Mosaic porch at some regular times? … Some regular singing therapy would be good for anyone who wanted to take part. And having a safe place to go and do something with friends would help everyone, too.”

Barbershoppers React:

Legacy Quartet Championship

This week, we invited a group of BHS staff and volunteers to a sneak peek at a few Legacy Quartet Championship performances. What started as a planning meeting quickly became a joyous gathering of barbershoppers laughing, crying, and sharing their reactions to seeing this archived content... most for the first time. We just had to share this moment with you!

Interactive chat room access is only available with a ticket purchase, so make your plans to join the conversation. While the chat room format will be different from what you see here, the conversations will be equally impactful. This is a Zoom chat you WILL NOT want to miss!

Chat room hosts include: David Wright, Jim Henry, Cindy Hansen Ellis, Tim Waurick, Mo Field, Jim Kline, Debbie Cleveland, Rick Taylor, and many more BHS historians, gold medalists, experts, and superfans!

A Special Person of Note

BHS member Amanda Hauler tells her story about her wonderful grandfather, who she named as her Person of Note in 2020.

It’s great to be a barbershopper! The Barbershop Harmony Society has been a part of my life since 2007, and I couldn’t be happier to finally be a member of the organization. The day I joined I was asked “Who’s your Person of Note?” I am glad to say that my grandfather, my Pop Pop, introduced me to his barbershop chorus when I was in high school.
If you refer a member to BHS and they list you as their Person of Note, in addition to your pin, you will receive $10 off your membership renewal! In fact, for EVERY member you refer during this time period, you will receive $10 off your membership renewal.

Bring a BHS staff member to your next virtual meeting or rehearsal

The move to virtual rehearsals presents a unique opportunity for collaboration and learning for all types of chapters. We've created a special program to make Harmony Hall staff available for chapter rehearsals, administration planning, or board meetings during your scheduled chapter or ensemble meeting time.

During their 30 minute time-slot (more if their availability allows it), a BHS staff member of your choosing would be happy to speak on a selected topic, lead warm-ups, share best practices, or just be a fly on the wall.

A View From the Inside:
Serving on the Society Board

Guest blog by Jeremy Brann, Society Board Member at Large

I’m seven months into my three-year term here on the Society Board. I absolutely love the work. It is also nothing at all like I had pictured it.

Because we need a spectacular slate of candidates for the special election this Fall, I thought I might highlight some of the ups and downs of the job to help you determine if YOU might be the right candidate for the Society Board of Directors.

I didn’t know any of my fellow Board members prior to my election, aside from the occasional chat with (Immediate Past President) Skipp Kropp at a Cardinal event. Today, I consider them all friends. These are good people who truly want to serve. They all have a hundred other things going on in their lives but they make time for the important work of the Board.
