MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Hello Sakai Families,

Happy first Monday of the school year! In typical 2020 style, it comes with some issues. I hope you and your family are able to stay healthy and safe while air quality remains poor. As always, please let us know if any needs arise that we can help with or address. We are all in this together!

Please join us tomorrow for our Back to School night. We will start with a live webinar that will cover some school wide information, including:
  • General schedule information
  • Attendance overview
  • Launchpad vs.Google Classroom
  • COHO overview
  • Introduction of specialist teachers
This will begin at 5:00 and go until 5:15. We will open it up at 4:50 to allow for families to log on and be ready. We will also record and share for families that are unable to join this portion of the night. The link for the webinar was emailed to parents.

Then, you will leave the webinar and join your teachers Zoom meeting using the link that was emailed to you on Friday. I apologize for the need to join two different Zoom meetings. However, each teaching team has specific information for you and it’s important to us to provide this in a live format.

We are so grateful for you, Sakai families! This year has taken an incredible amount of partnership between home and school. Tomorrow we will continue to grow and strengthen that relationship.

Back to School Parent Night

Fifth and sixth grade Parent Night is Tuesday, September 15th from 5:00 - 6:15 pm.

PTO NEWS
Dear Families and and Friends of Sakai Intermediate School,

I would like to introduce the 2020-2021 Sakai PTO and let our community know that we are fully committed to providing support, resilience, and fun as we begin this exciting new school year. 

Your PTO understands the formidable challenges imposed by the pandemic. We understand that nothing feels normal and we know that students, teachers, and parents have questions and concerns. We are going to do our best as a PTO to help our community meet and overcome these challenges. Despite the challenges, we hope you will still find much that feels familiar. We still have a caring community that has prepared for this year and is excited to pitch in and help. We also have new and compelling needs and the PTO will need volunteers, fundraising and a positive spirit. 

Please join our efforts!

We are in the process of getting our Sakai Intermediate School Spirit Wear so get ready to gear up!

The first PTO meeting of the year is scheduled for Friday, September 25 at 9:15 a.m. The link to join was emailed to families.

DISTRICT NEWS
The student nomination period for the Highly Capable Program is open now through September 21, 2020 for all students in grades 1-12.

Students currently qualified as highly capable with BISD do not need to be nominated or assessed again. 

BISD's Highly Capable Program serves students who perform at advanced academic levels. Students who are identified as highly capable become part of our district-wide program which provides learning opportunities throughout the student's academic career.

The nomination window for highly capable services for students in grades 1-12 is open now through September 21, 2020. Nominations for kindergarten students will be in January. 

Students who are nominated and have parent/guardian permission will have a cognitive assessment administered by a trained BISD staff member. A BISD team will review the student’s cumulative file, recent testing results and other standardized academic assessments. Parents/guardians will be notified of the results of the testing and team decision regarding placement and services. 

Those nominating students must complete 1) a referral form and 2) a rating scale. Both forms are available from the BISD district main office located at 8489 Madison Avenue or on the Highly Capable webpage https://www.bisd303.org/Page/10084. The referral form and parent rating scale need to be completed and turned in to the student’s school office by the end of the school day on September 21, 2020.
