Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Pomfret School celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day with different workshops and a panel discussion from Pomfret alumni opened by Dr. Omekongo Dubinga. Students and faculty came away from the workshops with a great sense of the impact Dr. King had on the world of diversity as well as a greater feeling of Pomfret pride.

Manuscripts: MLK Jr. Day Edition

Untitled by Alexsa Jack ’18
Simple Man, "Simple Man Does Not Know the Depth of The Universe" by Mr. Foronda

"I'm Black, I'm Proud, and My Legacy is Allowed" by Angel Kermah ’19

my darkness cannot be perceived by the human mind

it is known for swallowing one's conscious whole - consuming it to the point of no avail

encapsulating its victim to a lifetime of itself reflected on the skin like a canvas

strokes painted by invaders who’s evil light resisted the curse

God Himself materialized the portrait, but somehow the perceptions were preconceived

I wonder who did that?

the effect of this is my existence

I traverse along the platinum brick road looking for my Oz

looking for my salvation

it would be easier to go into my soul, and to fold into my origin

my existence is offensive because i am a child of the dark

our houses hold figurines that are priceless, made from scratch by Oshun

endowed to us by her. Goddess of love, prosperity, and beauty.

I am beautiful, nostalgic, royalty, heir to the kingdom of black

my skin exuberates warm sunlight that kisses the skin and caramelizes the quintessence of my spirit

the cadence of my speech is coveted and duplicated but never recreated

the fountain of youth in my skin

the fullness of my lips, my hips,  my thighs

turns into shots of botox and collagen in semblance of me

my dynasty is superior on a body that is not my own

my beauty is not beauty unless it is decolorized

my omnipotent darkness is dumbed down to become the bleached white light that is socialized into normality.

whiteness is the demise of my confidence

whiteness was the demise of my confidence

whiteness is confidence

but I’m black.

This poem appeared in Manuscripts, a portfolio of student and faculty artwork (paintings, drawings, ceramics, and photography), writing (prose, nonfiction, and poetry), and music. We aim to showcase our student and faculty talents via emails, our regularly updated website, and our printed booklet.
