LOCAL PROGRAMS
PBS HAWAIʻI CLASSICS: Hawaiian Steel Guitar (Wed., Dec. 21, 7:30 pm)  This rebroadcast of Spectrum Hawaiʻi features the story of the Hawaiian steel guitar, from its “invention” in 1889 by player Joseph Kekuku to innovations as explained and demonstrated by steel guitar masters Jerry Byrd, Barney Isaacs Jr., and Alan Akaka.

PACIFIC HEARTBEAT: James & Isey (Thur., Dec. 22, 7:30 pm) introduces Isey, a Ngāti Manu woman living in a small New Zealand town, who is about to turn 100, but still goes fishing and swills whiskey. The film is an intimate portrait of the centenarian and her son James, a deeply spiritual man who is devoted to his mother.

PBS HAWAIʻI PRESENTS: Keola Beamer: Malama Ko Aloha (Keep Your Love) (Thur., Dec. 22, 8:30 pm) Composer and slack key guitar master Keola Beamer evokes the richness of Hawaiʻi's music and dance traditions in stories that touch both heart and soul. In his latest endeavor, he shares a Beamer family philosophy that's been passed down through the generations about the many facets of aloha. 

Mary Berry’s Ultimate Christmas (Mon., Dec. 19, 8:00 pm) features the beloved British home cook and special friends as they prepare her Christmas feast with all the trimmings. From the traditional turkey to Mary’s classic Christmas pudding, it's the perfect recipe for a deliciously festive holiday.





On LUCKY CHOW: Paradise on a Plate (Sat., Dec. 24, 7:00 pm) host Danielle Chang meets chefs Alan Wong, Michelle and Wade Ueoki to create tuna poke. Also featured in this visit to Oʻahu are chef Mark Noguchi, the Matsuda family of Kahuku Farms, and Brooks Takenaka of the United Fishing Agency.




The Letter: A Message to Our Earth (Wed., Dec. 21, 8:00 pm) documents a contemporary call to action from one of the world's spiritual leaders, Pope Francis. The story features five persons on a voyage of discovery that raises questions about how science and spirituality can be vital to solving a globally defining issue: climate change. Among those appearing in the film are scientists Greg Asner and Robin Martin of the Hawaiʻi Marine Education and Research Center.
