WILKES RENAMING
Earlier this fall, a Renaming Committee was formed to explore new naming options for Captain Charles Wilkes Elementary.
Name suggestions were submitted via an online form, at outreach events and through the mail (email and post).

All in all, the committee had a list of 89 names to review and consider. It should be noted that some name submissions did not make the consideration list because they did not meet a reasonable threshold for various reasons such as being too whimsical (for example, Rainbow Unicorn Elementary) or containing inappropriate language.

From the list of 89 names, the committee narrowed the list down to three and has submitted the finalists to the board for consideration. At the March 30th School Board Meeting, members of the Renaming Committee will explain its selection process and the rationale for the three names. The school board is scheduled to select one of the three names to rename Wilkes Elementary.

The names under consideration are:
Akio Suyematsu Elementary
x̌alilc (Halilts) Elementary
Sunrise Hill Elementary

In addition, the committee is recommending that the Orca be officially recognized as the school’s mascot.
You can read more about the names here. If you would like to provide feedback on the names, please complete this form
