News Update: Kenyan banks prepare ATMs for new banknotes

Banks in Kenya are racing to reconfigure their ATMs to accommodate new legal tender, following the launch of a redesigned 1,000 Kenyan shilling (Sh) banknote on June 1 this year. The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) is introducing new banknotes with enhanced security features in an effort to combat counterfeiting, tax evasion and illicit financial flows.
Kenyans will have until October 1 to exchange their old Sh1,000 notes for new ones, with the two currencies circulating in parallel up until that date. The older versions of the smaller denominations – the 50, 100, 200, and 500 shilling notes - will remain in circulation alongside the new ones launched on June 1.
According to the Kenyan Bankers Association, its members are working closely with the CBK to prepare their ATMs for the transition. The work will include upgrading ATM software and replacing cash cartridges to accommodate the new, smaller notes, which have new security features. Sh1,000 notes account for 83% of the Sh540 cash billion currently in circulation.
At the time of writing, the Co-operative Bank of Kenya expected to complete the process of recalibrating its ATMs to recognise and dispense the new notes by mid-July. With 580 ATMs, this bank runs one of the biggest ATM networks in Kenya. The KBA estimates that there are around 1,700 ATMs in Kenya.
