Student film wins festival prize
|
Senior Emma Meyers' short film The New Old Witches was awarded best Sci-Fi/Fantasy at the 2023 Film Prize Junior New Mexico festival. A nonprofit organization committed to celebrating the rich diversity of New Mexico and its students, Film Prize Junior NM is a student short film competition for middle and high schoolers across the state. Educators and students work together to create a concept, write a story, and produce and edit a short film with help from film mentors. 57 schools participated in this year's competition and 93 student films were screened at the festival, which was held on April 2 at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Written and directed by Emma, The New Old Witches features a violin score composed and performed by Weston Keller '23 (who also edited the film) and stars fellow seniors Darcy LoRusso, Ella Meyer, and Alex Walpin. Some scenes were shot on Prep's campus, while others were filmed on a CNM sound stage previously used in Better Call Saul. Stay tuned! The New Old Witches, and all other nominated films, will be available to view on the festival's website soon.

Dan Murray’s senior Latin American Studies classes have been exploring Mexico's political, social, and economic situation. As part of the unit, students visited SITE Santa Fe to see an exhibit titled “Direct Action” by Pedro Reyes, a Mexican artist who uses sculpture, architecture, video, performance, and participation. His works aim to increase individual and collective agency in social, environmental, political, and educational situations, and the exhibit gave wonderful insights into the renowned artist's perspectives on issues the students are exploring in the classroom.

Ellee Cook's 9th grade Biology classes are studying Phylogenetics, a branch of science focused on the evolution of organisms and patterns of evolutionary descent. Based on data like morphology (physical characteristics) or genetics (DNA), phylogenetic trees are branching diagrams that model possible evolutionary relationships between groups of organisms. Students used pipe cleaners to craft phylogenetic trees based on a dataset of characteristics that are present or absent in a group of organisms. The tree pictured above was made by Atlas Thron-Smith '26.
- Terry Vinson's ASL II and III classes welcomed visitor Tash Terry, a local ASL interpreter, musician, and Artistic Director of the Indigenous women-led nonprofit IndigenousWays. In class, students signed questions for Tash, who shared stories about becoming an interpreter and working with the Deaf Indigenous community.

Registration is now open for Prep's 2023 EE Ford Summer Teachers' Colloquium. The goal of the Colloquium is to give teachers the opportunity to engage deeply in their subject matter, connect with a community of educators, and reconnect with their own love of learning so that they return to the classroom in the fall inspired and recharged. Registration is quite affordable for independent school teachers, and Santa Fe Public School teachers can attend for free! If you know teachers who might be interested in attending, please spread the word! Visit LearnInSantaFe.org for more info, and contact Colloquium Director Summar Aubrey with any questions.
