In the summer months, Purple Martins gather in large numbers before heading to their wintering grounds in South America. They spend their days feeding on flying insects to fuel up for their long journey and come together to rest at night, sometimes in groups of up to 500,000! You can see these communal roosts in the Houston area from July to September.
