Reid Hoffman, entrepreneur, investor and co-founder of LinkedIn, to deliver 2022 Graduates Day address

Hoffman will speak to the Class of 2022 and their families on Graduates Day in Memorial Gym on May 12 as part of the university’s Commencement celebrations. The event will also be livestreamed and open to all students and their families. Graduates Day celebrates all graduates and traditionally occurs the day before the university’s Commencement ceremony, which this year is scheduled for May 13.

To provide opportunities for deep discussion of what it means to grow and flourish at Vanderbilt, Jill Stratton, assistant provost for residential education and associate dean for residential colleges, has hosted a variety of dinner guests and students at E. Bronson Ingram College and Nicholas S. Zeppos College this semester. The Thrive Dinner Series is part of the larger Sophomore Experience program that is focused on transfer students and the Class of 2024.

Applications open for the Summer 2022 Vanderbilt Data Science Institute Summer Research Program

The Vanderbilt Data Science Institute Summer Research Program (DSI–SRP) provides Vanderbilt undergraduate students with the opportunity to engage in 10 weeks (Monday, June 6–Friday, Aug. 12, 2022) of full-time data science focused research in collaboration with any full-time Vanderbilt faculty member during the summer. The goal of DSI–SRP is to encourage and enhance student-faculty mentoring and joint research efforts in data science.

Engineering’s Shun Ahmed is 2022 Outstanding Senior at Vanderbilt

Outstanding Senior is among the highest honors an undergraduate student can receive at Vanderbilt. The award recognizes a senior who exemplifies the values of the university community through their leadership, service and passion. Vanderbilt community members recognized engineering student Shun Ahmed’s impact throughout her time at Vanderbilt and her passion for diversity, inclusion and volunteering when she was named 2022 Outstanding Senior on Oct. 23 during the halftime program of the Homecoming football game versus Mississippi State. The 2022 finalists for Outstanding Senior included Kaylin Davis, Melissa Goldin, Schuyler Kresge, Ashwin Kumar, Jack Mok, Varsha Nair, Chidiogo Nwakoby, Emma Rafatjoo and Maddie Woods.

Home Fires: The Story of the Churchwell Brothers

When Vanderbilt’s vice chancellor for equity, diversity and inclusion Dr. André Churchwell, BS’75, was a biomedical engineering student at Vanderbilt, his daily commute from East Nashville was emblematic of the obstacles he faced growing up in a segregated neighborhood and in a city that just a few years earlier had been at the center of the civil rights struggle.

Inspired by their upbringing in segregated Nashville, Dr. Churchwell and his brothers, Kevin and Keith Churchwell, have succeeded against the odds, excelling as both physicians and administrators.
