| MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
| |
Dear Sakai Families,
Last week 5th-graders learned about our local Orca population and the importance of environmental conservation during the Whale Tales assembly. It was really fun to see them all in the gym learning and laughing together, and then diving deeper in a smaller presentation in the library. This was ahead of this week’s salmon release. Our fry are ready to go and each class has reserved a time to hike down to our salmon stream. Although our wonderful maintenance department cleaned the trail up, it would be a good idea to have your student wear boots on the day they are scheduled.
We are seeing an up-tick in phones and Smartwatches distrupting learning. We do have students that have phones to communicate with their families after school, which is totally understandable. Just a reminder that our phone policy at Sakai is that they are stored in students bags or ‘ers during the day. Once students walk into the building in the morning they are to be put away. Families, if your student wears a Smartwatch, please use the parental controls to silence it and restrict communication during the day. If you need to get a hold of your student while at school, please call the office. Likewise, students are always able to call you from the office phone. Thank you for your help with this.
I hope you have a great week and a wonderful break!

Both Sakai and Woodward are starting to look at math placement for students next year and want to ensure students are placed in the math course that best meets their needs. Please look over the math course options for the next school year and then complete the short survey with your student.
If you have any questions, please reach out to your student's math teacher. It would be helpful to have your completed survey by March 31st.

Earlier this fall, a Renaming Committee was formed to explore new naming options for Captain Charles Wilkes Elementary.
Name suggestions were submitted via an online form, at outreach events and through the mail (email and post).
All in all, the committee had a list of 89 names to review and consider. It should be noted that some name submissions did not make the consideration list because they did not meet a reasonable threshold for various reasons such as being too whimsical (for example, Rainbow Unicorn Elementary) or containing inappropriate language.
From the list of 89 names, the committee narrowed the list down to three and has submitted the finalists to the board for consideration. At the March 30th School Board Meeting, members of the Renaming Committee will explain its selection process and the rationale for the three names. The school board is scheduled to select one of the three names to rename Wilkes Elementary.
The names under consideration are: Akio Suyematsu Elementary x̌alilc (Halilts) Elementary Sunrise Hill Elementary
In addition, the committee is recommending that the Orca be officially recognized as the school’s mascot.
You can read more about the names here. If you would like to provide feedback on the names, please complete this form.
SCHOOL BOARD MEETING WHEN: March 30th at 5:45 p.m. WHERE: Bainbridge High School Theater, located on the corner of High School Road and MLK. Jr. Way. Greeters will direct people to the theater. The meeting will also be available via Zoom.
