    TRUE MAROONS

Ut Fidem coordinator, recently returned from a pilgrimage to Iceland with students Matthew Dietrich '23, Johnny Fox '23, Danny Nielsen '23, Trevor Holtorf '23, Ben Hoover '23 and Joe Wilwerding '23. Highlights included a climb to the
top of “holy mountain” Mount HelgaFell; exploring the Raufarhólshellir Volcano cave; visiting the Golden Circle and endless black beach; and daily Mass, praying liturgy of the hours and celebrating Mass with Carmelite Sisters.

Ut Fidem coordinator Kirby Power ‘18 and a group of current students recently attended the SEEK23 Conference in St. Louis which several alumni also attended. Here's what was happening 50 years ago on Buffalo Road....
  • Bob Sanner '75 started the new year right, recording a hat trick in a 12-6 ice hockey win over Hoover.

  • The Iowa Commerce Commission ordered flashing railroad signals be erected at the Buffalo Road crossing just east of campus.

  • Sister Myra reported that the circulation of the student newspaper was 5,500 copies - 1,800 distributed on campus and 3,700 mailed to Dowling Club members.

  • Diane Reed '75 and Liz McDermott '76 led the girls gymnastics team during a successful January schedule.

  • Mike Grace '73 was named to the Catholic All-American football team team by the newspaper of the Archdiocese of Chicago.

  • The Stepperettes marched along the route of President Richard Nixon’s inaugural parade in Washington, D.C.

  • Camelot, with Liz Galloway '74 and Cindy Steffen '73 at Guinevere, Sean Sullivan '74 as Arthur and Bill Tell '74 as Lancelot, was performed three times.

  • After a quarter of the lights in the gym went out and a 15-minute delay, Greg Palmersheim '73 sank two free throws with five seconds left to lift the Maroons to a 71-70 boys basketball victory over East.
