Faculty Fellows - Call for Nominations

Dear Colleagues,

The Office of the Provost seeks nominations for dynamic members of Duke’s regular-rank faculty to join the inaugural community of QuadEx Faculty Fellows on West Campus. We encourage you to nominate faculty colleagues who are passionate about engaging undergraduate students outside of the classroom in students' search for purpose, meaning, and intellectual growth. Self-nominations are also encouraged.

As a residential university, Duke works to foster an environment in which living and learning are closely intertwined. To realize this vision, we have developed QuadEx, a new approach to living and learning that seeks to strengthen on-campus communities, enable deeper exploration of intellectual interests, and support student well-being and growth.

A fundamental goal of QuadEx is to bring the academic mission closer to the social and residential lives of our students, and the Faculty Fellows will play a critical role in advancing this effort.

The Faculty Fellows will collaborate with students and campus partners on West Campus to support intellectual exploration and joyful discovery of a life of the mind. Faculty Fellows will not live in the residence halls as do the Faculty-in-Residence on East Campus, but they will share meals, ideas, and conversation with upperclass students on West Campus.  A broad range of both informal and structured interaction with students will be encouraged, and Faculty Fellows can draw freely and creatively on their personal and professional interests as they foster community and support unique student projects and experiences in the Quad-based residential setting.

The Office of the Provost will name up to 5 inaugural Faculty Fellows to join our two lead Levitan Faculty Fellows, Shani B. Daily and Greg Samanez-Larkin, for academic year 2022-2023. Please submit the name and department of faculty nominees via this brief form by Friday, March 25.

Nominees will be asked to provide a statement of interest and a letter of support from the department chair, and a committee of faculty, staff, and students will then make recommendations to us for final review.  Additional details, including compensation information, will be provided to nominees.
The Faculty Fellows will:
  • Serve as a role model, mentor, and resource to upperclass students through both formal programming (social, cultural, and intellectual/academic) as well as informal interactions with Quad residents.
  • Support student-driven ideas for intellectual exploration and engagement in the West Campus Quads.
  • Collaborate with student-led Quad Councils, Housing and Residence Life staff, Academic Guides, Peer Support Leaders, Faculty-in-Residence on East Campus, and other campus partners, such as Alumni Affairs and the Career Center, to realize our intellectual exploration goals.
We are excited about this new opportunity to shape the living-learning experience of our undergraduate students.  If you have any questions, please contact Shani B. Daily and Gregory Samanez-Larkin, Levitan Faculty Fellows and Special Assistants to the Vice Provosts for Undergraduate Education and Student Affairs, via email at LeadFacultyFellows@duke.edu
