A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Ordway Families,

The start of school is fast approaching at Ordway Elementary where our motto is “Caring to Learn, Learning to Care”.  We have been preparing for our 2020-2021 students and can’t wait to get to know Ordway families more as the school year progresses. Ordway staff members have been working hard in preparation for the school year. Our teacher teams participated in some intensive professional development in early August and they are ready to use several pathways such as zoom, hands-on materials, and community building activities to meet each student where they are at and help them grow both academically and socially this year.

School Start Dates: The first day of school for grades 1-4 is Wednesday September 2, 2020.  All BISD Kindergarten students start school Tuesday, September 8th. Washington State mandates that we transition Kindergarten students into their first formal year of school by holding a WaKIDS (Washington Kindergarten Inventory of Developing Skills) conference. Typically, students and families come to our school building in person, which allows the teacher, student and family to make connections and begin building their school and family partnership. In addition, teachers typically use this time to get to know a bit more about each child; their individual skills and strengths so that they can best meet individual student needs. The overall intent of these conferences remains the same, but this year they will be held via Zoom. Kindergarten parents will receive an email with information on how to sign up for a Family Connection Conference on one of the offered dates of September 2nd, 3rd or 4th.

Greet & Go:  In order to provide hands-on-activities and paper/pencil tasks for our students, we plan to distribute materials on a regular basis. Our first distribution of Student Materials will be our Greet & Go Drive Thru on Sept 1st. A distribution schedule will follow at a later date.

Class assignments will be available on Skyward Family Access beginning August 27th after 4pm. If you need help with your username or password please email Office Manager Sarah Dunstan sdunstan@bisd303.org.

If you have additional questions regarding the start of the year, please do not hesitate to call our office at: 842-7637.

Kind Regards,
Melinda Reynvaan

Applying for Free & Reduced Meals

Free and reduced-price lunches may be obtained by any student whose family income falls within the guidelines set by the US Department of Agriculture. We encourage everyone to apply — it’s quick and easy. In addition, students can apply at any time during the school year, and applications are reviewed as quickly as possible.

If you qualified last year, eligibility carries forward for the first 30 days of the new school year. After 30 days, school meals revert to the full price unless a new qualifying application is submitted. Charges that accrue before a new application is approved are the responsibility of the parent/guardian to pay.

ANNUAL BACK TO SCHOOL TRADITION

While the school year may not be beginning in a traditional way, that doesn't mean our traditions have to stop! In fact, it's more important than ever to maintain traditions when we are able to do so safely.

Calling all students and staff  − here's a chance to connect with others by printing and completing this year's 2020-21 School Year sign and snapping a photo. Plesae send your photo to ebischoff@bisd303.org and we will compile a first-day-of-school slideshow.
TIPS:
  • Please write as large as possible
  • Unable to print off the sign? That's OK! Simply write what makes you happy on a piece of paper.
  • Please take the photo vertically (phone up and down, NOT side to side)
  • Special thanks to Lochlyn McCollum for sending in the first photo!
