Weekend plans

Word on the street is bars and restaurants are at 100% capacity, so... let’s talk about how we can go out with friends and still make it home safely.
  1. Staying sober? If you choose to drink, make sure you do so responsibly. Eat a meal, pace yourself and drink plenty of water. If you’re choosing not to drink, make a plan to make sure you feel comfortable.
  2. Buddy system: Stick with your friends throughout the night! Look out for each other and communicate changes in plans.
  3. Make a plan for getting home: Uber, Lyft and taxis are almost always running around Oxford. The Safe Ride shuttle is free to students and runs from the square to campus every Thursday-Saturday, 9 p.m.-2 a.m. If you have to walk, stay with friends on well-lit walkways. Driving home drunk is NOT an option.
  4. Step up when something doesn’t seem right: The best way we can help keep others safe is to speak up if something doesn't seem right. Don’t just assume someone else will handle it, because that someone might need to be you. Here’s how you can help.
  • Direct: when something doesn't look right, share your concerns and offer help.
  • Delegate: if you can, ask another person to approach a situation with you.
  • Distract: divert attention from the situation and allow those at risk to leave safely

Signs that someone may be struggling with addiction:

  • Loss of control
  • Neglecting other activities
  • Risk taking
  • Relationship issues
  • Secrecy
  • Changing appearance
  • Family history
  • Increased tolerance
  • Withdrawal
  • Continued use despite negative consequences

If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction, please reach out for help. The William Magee Center offers individual substance safety wellness consultations and the University Counseling Center offers confidential services to students as well. They are here to help students!

Wondering about how to get involved? Come by “One Big Week” on the Student Union Plaza, Monday-Friday, Mar. 15-19 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. to learn about service events, register to volunteer, donate or grab giveaways.

Donate to the cause: The Big Event and other partner student orgs are hosting a collection drive for personal care supplies and infant/child products to send to Jackson in response to the devastation from the recent winter storm. You can bring your donations to the Big Event tent at the Union Plaza anytime during One Big Week.

The Big Event’s first virtual 5k will be going on throughout One Big Week! Students can register through The Forum, take a screenshot of their fitness tracker and bring it to Big Event staff at the Union Plaza during One Big Week, Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. for a free T-shirt and a voucher for a Frutta Bowl. Proceeds will benefit The Big Event’s community projects. Register for the virtual 5k here.

Peer consultants will help you create individualized strategies for becoming a more effective and confident public speaker. One-on-one consultations, live chat, written speech editing, group workshops and other speech communication-focused resources are delivered face-to-face or online. See here for more info or to schedule a consultation.

It’s not NOT six weeks to finals

So... how were your midterms? If you used the facepalm emoji about school last week, maybe it’s time for a refresh on your study habits or even help from a tutor. Here are some reminders and resources:
  1. Get a study group.
  2. Make yourself a schedule.
  3. Start assignments early.
  4. Stay on top of your reading.
  5. Ask your professor or GA if they can recommend a tutor.
If you’re not sure where to start, reach out to the Center for Student Success and First-Year Experience. They can help you identify any issues and suggest solutions.

Announcements and reminders

Asymptomatic testing is now four days a week, Monday-Thursday. Did you know that some of your classmates won $1,000 scholarships just for getting tested? That could be you. If you don’t win, you’ll at least get an Ole Miss hat. To get a test, text “2020” to 833-991-3009 or click here.
If you know of a staff or faculty member who has gone above and beyond to help a student in the past year, nominate them for the Thomas Frist Student Service Award. Nominations are open until Apr. 5.
The deadline for nominations for the Donald R. Cole Excellence in Promoting Inclusiveness in Graduate Education Award is extended until March 15. This award recognizes an outstanding person, program or unit whose work advances our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion within graduate education at UM.
