At the Gathering of the Supervisors in Spring 2022, we were reminded how impactful it is to spend time together as supervisors of student staff — to share stories of success and challenge and to feel a sense of campus community.
To keep it going, we are launching a monthly space (first Thursdays @ 11:30 a.m.) for supervisors to gather and connect. Each month, these roundtable discussions will feature a topic that supervisors have suggested we dig into (maybe it'll be a topic YOU suggested).
- October 6: Assigning meaningful work
-
November 3: Discovering and leaning into your personal supervisory style
- December 1: Managing your workload while also coordinating, guiding, and inspiring the work of students
|
We'll kick the year off on October 6 in the Misner Room of Collins Memorial Library (LIBR 127). Bring your questions and stories (and your lunch, if you'd like) — we look forward to gathering with you!

What do I do with a Non-disclosure and Confidentiality Agreement* once a student signs it? This form is kept on file by the department for the duration of a student’s employment in your department.
This form is not required, but may be used if there are student positions in your department that involve access to confidential information)
When does my student need to complete the harassment and discrimination prevention training course? Students who are new to employment in your department should complete the training online (found on myPugetSound >> Job Information) within one month of beginning their employment with you.
This online training should be completed as paid time worked. You should ask students to print or send you their certificate of completion for the training and keep it in your departmental files for the duration of their employment.

Grab a moment, wherever you can find it, to say hi and check in with your student staff members.
Ask your student staff: What is a strength, skill, or experience that you bring to this job and how will you use it in your day-to-day work?
BENEFIT: You learn something about how they view themselves AND discover a strength, skill, or experience that you and the student can put to good use in your work together.
Reciprocate: Share with your student staff about one of the strengths, skills, or experiences you bring to your job and how you find it impacting your day-to-day work.
BENEFIT: They learn something about you — building trust and strengthening the relationship — while gaining insight into workplace dynamics.

Taking those extra moments to intentionally create connection, build relationship, and be available for your student staff has an out-sized impact in supporting students, avoiding performance issues later on, and establishing a place of belonging at work.
