Dear Sakai Families,
I hope this newsletter finds you and your family safe and enjoying the August weather. First, our community was shaken this week with the passing of Kay Sakai-Nakao. Our school is named after her father and she has been so connected and active in our school since we opened. From all accounts, Kay was a beloved presence in our school community. She will be dearly remembered.
Second, I want to take this opportunity to say thank you. Although I am new to Sakai, I know as both an educator and a parent of elementary aged children, the move to remote learning last spring was extremely challenging. On behalf of our staff, we are so grateful to you and your partnership. Although we are starting remote, this fall will look different from the spring. We have been working hard to create a continuous learning environment that is rigorous and supportive for our students, both academically and emotionally.
We are so excited for this upcoming school year, and can’t wait to get started!
Drew Crandall
Principal

In loving memory of Kay Sakai-Nakao, who passed at the young age of 100 years old on August 17, 2020. We will honor, cherish, and tell her story forever. Just as she loved and honored everyone she met. Rest in peace our dearest Kay.

Below is a sample of what a student day may look like.
Each day will begin at 8:05 with students checking in with their homeroom teacher and watching the school broadcast. Our school wide break and lunch will be from 10:55-11:55. Specific details around instructional delivery will vary, but in general we know that students will have time each day for synchronous learning (all students logged on at the same time) followed by independent or small group work time. Look for more detailed schedules coming from teachers.

Homeroom Assignment and Specialists
Class placement information will be available in Family Acces on Friday, August 21st, after 4:00 pm.
Students will be able to view their homeroom teacher assignment. Their class schedule will include four core courses with team teacher names assigned.
There will not be a specialist, Art, PE, Band or Music class listed in their schedule at this time.
All students will be provided opportunities to meet with our music, art and PE specialists during remote learning. Classes will be on a rotating schedule that will be provided to you by your homeroom teacher.
In light of guidance around band programs, we will be delaying the start of fifth grade band. Mr. Shine will be providing music instruction to all fifth grade students that will be applicable to band students for when we resume. We know this is disappointing news to our fifth grade band students. Please take a moment to watch this video from Mr. Shine.

The outgoing Sakai PTO is looking for a small group of leaders to carry the baton forward in these uncertain times. The job of PTO this year will be simple but important.
At this time, PTO needs to fill the positions of Co-Presidents.
Please email Morgan Rohrbach, morgan@bainbridgeseniorliving.com, if you are interested. It may be hard to fathom an extra load at this time, but the work is rewarding and doable!
