| Dear #RPSStrong Family,
I want to extend a huge thank you to my guests on RPS Live! tonight: Principal Anderson (Blackwell ES), Principal Powell (Cary ES), Principal Hartsfield (MLK PS), Principal London (Henderson MS), and Principal Murray (Marshall HS). If you missed it, I strongly encourage you to catch the video on the RPS Facebook page. It's like watching a TED talk on leadership - but even better. Please join me in expressing our profound gratitude to these extraordinary leaders, and the many others in RPS they represent!

| As you might recall, in December we celebrated Inclusive Schools Week and we asked our students to submit a t-shirt design to promote inclusion. I'm thrilled to announce the winner: Bella Brownlee, a 4th grade student at Linwood Holton Elementary School! Bella's design is shown below, which you can actually order from the RPS Love Store! Bella is also our RPS Voice for this week; check out her video below.
With great appreciation,
Jason

- The 8th grade team at Boushall Middle School would like to take this opportunity to give a public virtual standing ovation to our leader, Ms. Latonya Waller. Principal Waller is a very involved and present leader, she's very dedicated to the staff and the students, is always looking for resources for us, and always engages with our parents and the community. Her true goal is simply for each student and teacher to be successful and she is willing to do anything to make that happen. We can't imagine working with a better leader! We love and appreciate you, Principal Waller!
- Shout out to Dr. Hurt at Holton! Dr. Hurt has shown care and support for teachers, staff, students and families throughout this challenging time. Her compassion for the heartbreaks some have endured, as well as her strength to deal with so many demands, is greatly appreciated. Dr. Hurt, thank you for sharing your gifts and talents with us.
- Shout out to Westover Hills Elementary School Principal Ms. El Koubi! Her leadership is inspiring. Ms. El Koubi uses her strength to empower others and help each of us to recognize the value of our voice. She demonstrates her commitment to our children through her compassion, creativity, and intentional relationships. My daughter misses her welcoming smile and high-fives at the door each morning, but loves seeing her pop into the virtual classroom and is excited to see her at every online Friday Celebration. Thank you, Ms. El Koubi, for leading our school, and for powerfully investing in the lives of our students, teachers, and families!
- I'd like to shout-out to Principal Powell from John B. Cary! He is honoring relationships through this virtual setting. In our Wednesday Morning Meeting he invited one of our staff's past teachers to give words of encouragement and support. There were tears all around! Thank you for thinking of intentional ways to make your staff feel supported and valued!
- I want to shout out Principal Shannon Washington at Woodville. She works hard to make sure the students and teachers get what they need to make virtual learning as fun and efficient as possible. We don't get to tell her often, but we appreciate her and all that she does for us. Our fifth grade team especially thanks her for all of her support and her leadership. #TheWoodvilleWay
- I would like to send a shout to Principal El Koubi at Westover Hills Elementary! Our family loves the virtual Friday Celebrations and she gets our kids dancing every Friday afternoon. These events really help our second grader feel connected to her school family at Westover Hills. We are so thankful to have a great principal!
- I would like to shout out Greg Muzik, Mary Munford’s principal. He is an incredible leader who is well-respected by staff, parents, community, and students. Greg treats his teachers with unwavering professionalism. When a situation is stressful, Greg is always calming and supportive. He is the best boss and Mary Munford reflects every aspect of his tremendous leadership!
- Here's to the absolutely fantastic, amazing Mr. Muzik of Mary Munford Elementary School. I have worked for him for 17 years and in that time, I have been continually in awe of the way he relates to his staff, the students at Munford, and the school-wide community. Especially this year, he has been the glue that has held our school community together. Three cheers for Mr. Muzik! Hip, hip, hooray!!
- A big shout out to our wonderful assistant principal, Mrs. Miller. I appreciate her community circle meetings every Wednesday morning and her calm and patient way. She is endlessly helpful and strives to make things work well for everyone involved. Go, Mrs. Miller!
- Thank you, Mr. William Robinson, for today's chicken Wednesday comment during our PD greetings. Not only was it an enjoyable reminder of some of my best memories as a Hampton undergrad student, but it also gave our co-workers a fun opportunity to show their HBCU pride. It's these connections that make me proud and thankful to be an RPS educator, RCMS Red Tail, and HBCU graduate.
- A special shout-out to Crystal Hartsfield, our principal at MLK Preschool Center, who has remained a strong, kind, fair, patient and supportive leader during these unusual times. She has shown both her staff and our families that she truly cares, as she guides us toward success in a virtual world. Thank you for keeping us a family as we navigate through uncertainty!
- I would like to shout out the administrative team at Miles Jones Elementary School. Sonya Shaw, Jennifer Smith, and Tarnee Hudson are simply the best! Their leadership, teamwork and dedication to their staff and students have shined through many unsure times this school year. They are always available and ready to help when needed. Thank you for all you do!
- During Virginia School Principals Appreciation Week I would be remiss if I did not shout out Greg Muzik, the principal of Mary Munford Elementary. While RPS has many amazing principals, I happen to believe he is the best. He is an extraordinary leader who truly embodies what it means to “lead with love”. He easily works 60 plus hours a week – to include weekends. He recently had out-patient surgery and was supposed to be out on leave – but he never stopped working. His work ethic, passion for educating the whole child, and sense of community caring has created a school culture that allows our scholars to not only thrive academically but thrive in social and emotional skills – to build character that will serve them well throughout their lives. Through his service style of leadership, he influences a culture of teachers and staff who perpetuate the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., “Intelligence plus character, that is the true goal of education.” Thank you, Greg, for all you do for our scholars, their families, and for us. Love you!
- Happy Principal Appreciation Week, Mrs. Dabney. Thanks for all you do and thanks for being the great leader you are. Thanks for your love and compassion.
- I would like to shout out Principal Sonya Shaw of Miles Jones Elementary. Mrs. Shaw's dedication to her staff, students, and school community is unwavering! Although she has her own personal challenges, she finds a way to balance it all with compassion and empathy for us, making sure that we are ok during this unprecedented time. Her outstanding leadership and strategic thinking about how we can continue to move forward and strive for excellence is highly valued and commendable. I am ever so grateful for her strong leadership and grace that she shows us daily, letting us know that we are in this together and that we can do virtually anything!
- Sending a larger than large shout-out to Dr. Hampton!!!!!!!! Thank you so very much for all you do, going above and beyond. Sorry our first year together has to be virtual. You are always accessible and prompt with a response. Thanks for being mindful of our personal time as well. It is a pleasure to have you lead and serve us this year!!!!!!!
- Here's to two of the greatest administrators a teacher could ever work under - Greg Muzik and Sametrian Miller at Mary Munford! They are the perfect complement to each other and provide teachers, staff, and the families we serve with a positive school culture and climate. Both of them value the input of teachers and treat us like the professionals we are. They also go above and beyond to make sure that the children and their families feel welcomed and heard. They are proof of the positive impact that effective administrators can have on a school!
- I would like to shout out Ms. Waller, the principal of Boushall Middle School. She always takes the time to remember that some of us are parents, care givers, and most importantly, human beings before we are teachers. This makes working in the virtual setting during a pandemic so much easier. Thank you, Ms. Waller, for being awesome!
- Thanks to Cleveland Walton, principal of J.B. Fisher Elementary, for taking the time on a weekend evening to call our 2nd grader just to wish him a happy birthday. Our kid was feeling a bit sad about his weekend birthday during a pandemic, and this brightened his day so much.
- I would like to send a shout out to our fantastic principal, Greg Muzik, at Mary Munford Elementary School. He is the most positive influence for both staff and parents. He is always willing to go the extra mile and seems to know how to do everything technical. We all are so lucky to have him as principal!
- I would like to send a shout out message of praise for our Principal Allison El Koubi at Westover Hills Elementary School. She has been a wonderful addition to our school since joining us a few years ago. She is warm, friendly, and caring with our students. She is stellar at communicating to parents what is happening at the school and is available and interactive with the staff. She knows everyone’s name from the students to their parents and even siblings. For Principal Appreciation Week she most certainly deserves to be highlighted. Our school is better because of her leadership.
- The River City Middle School Science Department would like to shout-out our outstanding administrators, Mrs. Murphy-Braxton, Mr. Sinclair, Ms. Jamison, and Ms. Estrada! With much appreciation, we thank you all for everything you continue to do for the students, families, communities, and staff/faculty. Please continue to be the guiding light for our communities.
- I am incredibly grateful to work for Principal Greg Muzik. He embodies everything a leader should be: hard-working, kind, patient, dedicated, thoughtful, and caring. He leads by example in many ways, and the joy and work ethic in our school building come from the top down. He respects teachers and believes in their ability to know and do what is best for students. His door is always open...he is never too busy for a student, parent, or staff member. He listens to concerns, helps solve problems, and gives great advice. He is our fearless leader with a big heart and seemingly endless time and energy to give to all. He makes our school a very happy place, day in and day out. Thank you for all you do, Mr. Muzik!
- Shout out to Kecia Ryan, principal at J.L. Francis. Thanks for your support and positivity. You truly make us feel like a family.
- I would like to give a huge shout out to Teya Green, the principal at Broad Rock Elementary. She goes above and beyond to make sure the staff and students have what they need in order to succeed. She is constantly checking in and checking up on the health and well being of our team. She genuinely cares for our students. She strives for new and creative ways to connect with our students and parents so that they know they are still part of the Broad Rock family during this time of virtual learning. I have worked with her for many years and I can honestly say that leading with love is not a new concept in our building. Thank you, Mrs. Green, for being the fabulous leader that you are!
- I would like to send a shout out for Mr. Greg Muzik, the principal at Mary Munford Elementary. He is the captain of our ship and without him we would be lost. He is a true leader who is always there for all of his teachers. He is so respected by everybody in the community and works tirelessly to make sure everything goes right for students, teachers and parents. There is nothing he won't do and it is amazing how he keeps doing it year after year like the Energizer bunny.
- I would like to give a huge shout out to my principal, Greg Muzik. The man has been gifted with the priceless knack for leading a group of diverse people. His leadership skills have created a vessel where the crew recognizes we are appreciated, valued, and respected. He promotes professionalism and provides an environment where we are excited to share our professional skills and talents. Because of him, work is a four letter word that means Wonderful, Outstanding, Rewarding, and Kool.
- I wanted to send a huge shout out to Mrs. El Koubi! She is an amazing principal. She is loving, caring, and truly dedicated to the kids. I will say that for the 3 years that I lived in Henrico and Chesterfield, I steered away from moving to the city because people told me that I would not want my kid to go to the city schools. I will say that I regret listening to them because we lost 3 years when we could have been at one of the best schools ever. We are in our final year at Westover and are very sad it’s ending this way. Because of people like Mrs. El Koubi and the entire staff at Westover, my child has come so far in her academics as well as her self-esteem. There have been a few staff members that continue to go above and beyond for my child and I want to eventually thank each and every one of them. I will start here with Mrs. El-Koubi. Thank you so much for all you have done for my child and thank you for the love and dedication you have for your school, the staff and most importantly, the future of this world.
- I'd like to give a shout-out to our terrific 6th grade assistant principal, Ms. Deanna Varljen of Lucille Brown Middle School. During this time of pandemic, she has been even more supportive, caring, and communicative than she was when we were in the building, if that's at all possible. Her leadership is truly a blessing, and we appreciate everything she does for us!
- In honor of Principal Week, the team at Higher Achievement Boushall wants to give our principal, Mrs. Waller, a huge shout out and thank you! Mrs. Waller and her Boushall team make a place for us and accept us as part of their team! We all work together to support the RPS Scholars under our care and it’s great to be part of her crew. We appreciate her making time for us to connect, inviting us to events, and always being open to share Higher Achievement updates.
- I want to give a big shout out to my media specialist, Ms. Powell. We have been using Discovery Education and I love the virtual library!
- My 2nd Grade class and I would like to extend a shoutout to Mrs. Green, Mrs. Petrey, and Mrs. Williams for the hard work they do and the care they provide to staff members, students, and families! They truly create a Broad Rock community centered on family! We're truly grateful!
- I would like to shout out Dr. Victoria Hampton for her leadership, encouragement, professionalism, and grace shown on a daily basis. I also want to thank Dr. Hampton for her acts of kindness shown to me and my family during my recent hospitalization. It was truly appreciated. You rock, Dr. Hampton!!
- Shout out to Principal Gordon of OGBES! He is hosting lunch time book chats with our students as well as going out on home visits in order to keep in touch with our families. I am so happy to have Mr. Gordon as our leader.
- I'm writing on behalf of the fourth grade team at Broad Rock Elementary School to shout out our wonderful administration. Our principal, Mrs. Teya Green, is deeply dedicated to her students and staff, and she knows the name of every child at our school. Our vice principal, Mrs. Rebecca Petrey, has boundless energy and enthusiasm that is bounced right back by our students when they see her pop into our classrooms. Our vice principal, Mrs. Lisa Williams, is full of ideas about how to connect with each other, from daily jokes to socially distant staff walks in the park. These three work so hard to make Broad Rock shine!
- I would like to send a huge shout-out to Principal London at Henderson Middle School! Mr. London is a strong leader, from holding high expectations for our team to showing grace and understanding. It feels great to work with a leader who you know will have an open ear and tackle any situation head on. He has a love for our students and our community and he “keeps the main thing, the main thing”. Thank you for all you do, Mr. London!
- Mr. Gordon, your positive attitude towards the teachers and staff have made this year easier to deal with!
- I’d like to give a shout out to Greg Muzik, the longest tenured, most successful principal in RPS history, measured by his ability to support and keep experienced staff. There has never been a more supportive principal. Greg works tirelessly to facilitate our challenging jobs and makes himself available at all times, day and night, pretty much 365 days a year, so that we can make the greatest learning environment for our kids. Through a multitude of central administrations and curricula that change like the wind, Greg has maintained one focus: Gather quality teachers and let them teach. It is a pleasure to work with and for him. He’s truly the best!
- Since March 2020, Principal Waller has shown understanding for her staff, working with us to remain COVID free in the office area. My family has been concerned about me going into the school. Ms Waller has made it so easy for me to work and also appease my family. I want to thank her for her concern for all of her employees who are coming into the school.
- A huge shout-out to Fox Elementary’s Daniela Jacobs and LaTonya Oliver. They have done an outstanding job of shepherding their students and school community this year, inspiring, leading and supporting us.
- I would like to shout out our principal, Dr. Wharton Carey, and AP, Mrs. Belcher, at Redd Elementary for always having our backs. They know and understand all the new demands being made on us this year and their realistic expectations and trust in us to make the necessary changes and adjustments to ensure our students are getting what they need make our jobs easier and make us feel supported. They both know the goal is to ensure students get their academic and social/emotional needs met and teachers need to feel trusted and respected for that to happen so they are always doing whatever it takes for the teachers and students to get what they need to be successful. Happy Principal Appreciation Week! Redd Lions appreciate you!
- I’d like to shout out Principal Rickey at Binford Middle. She facilitates a space where learners (including educators) can express their authentic selves through the arts - even virtually!
- Please shout out Fisher’s one and only Principal Walton. Thank you for always greeting each of our students by name and helping our Think Flamingos learn and grow!
- I'd like to thank LaTonya Waller, principal at T. C. Boushall Middle School, for all of her support and encouragement. Her door is always open and she is willing to share her expertise and advice. She not only goes above and beyond for her staff, she gives 125% to our students and their families! She is funny and smart and caring! It is a pleasure to work with her!
- I would like to give a shout out to Principal Ryan at J.L. Francis! Ms. Ryan is an exceptional administrator who is always available to listen and provide positive encouragement, is easily relatable, and provides constant support. Ms. Ryan has an open door policy and always has a story to share. I am very blessed to be under your leadership. Thank you for always bringing out the best in your staff and teaching us how to use our talents to improve the school and ourselves. We have learned to work as a team and as a family, keeping our students the priority. Thank you for always supporting my goals and ideas to help move students forward. #FrancisStrong
- Principal Moore at BOES is the epitome of a leader. We had our virtual parent meeting and it felt like we were a big family catching up. My 2nd and 5th graders love her so much. I don’t believe she knows the impact she has on them. They miss coming into the school and being greeted with a hug and a smile. She cares about her students her parents and her staff.
- I don’t even know where to begin with Principal Gilstrap's dedication to Hugenot. I took my daughter in for her senior pictures and was able to chat with him. He knows all his seniors and immediately encouraged my daughter to keep striving. He has seen her grow and believes in her. Mr. Gilstrap goes above and beyond, and his leadership shines through, from his teachers to our wonderful custodians. Mr. Gilstrap, you have left a mark on our children and as a Mom of a senior, I thank you. You shared with me some words that I have continued to replay: a mistake can turn into your biggest blessing!!! Thank you.
- We at E.D. Redd Elementary are so very fortunate to have the best administrators in Principal Dr. Sherry Wharton-Carey and Assistant Principal Mrs. Ebonee Belcher! Our Redd leaders are a caring and dynamic duo who always look after the needs of our students and their families, as well as of our faculty and staff. Dr. Carey and Mrs. Belcher, thank you so much for your excellent leadership and your support! You have created a winning team that truly is a family!
- I would like to extend a warm and well-deserved shout out to Mr. Walton at Fisher Elementary School. He has taken on the task of leading our school with love, compassion, and understanding during what has been an unprecedented school year. Mr. Walton manages to find the bright side of every situation and his support for the students and staff is unwavering. Mr. Walton, we appreciate you! Happy Principal Appreciation Week!
- I want to shout my daughter's 2nd grade teacher, Ms.Connolly at PHSSA. She has been nothing short of amazing. My schedule at work has been crazy. I even missed my daughter's supply pick-up. But Ms. Connolly went out her way to send photos of textbooks and even hunted down the missing books so I could pick them up on the weekend. I am forever grateful for her during this crazy pandemic season.
- I would like to give a huge shoutout to Principal Moore @ Barrack Obama ES and Principal Massenburg @ Richmond Community HS. Thank you both for leading with wisdom, kindness, empathy, optimism and determination!!

- I would like to shoutout the amazing administrators at Broad Rock Elementary: Mrs. Green, Mrs. Petrey, and Mrs. Williams. They have been holding down everything for the teachers and students, and have kept the Ram Fam strong this school year. The way they show their love and support to us all and make it apparent that they actually care makes me never want to leave. Thank you for all that you do! Seriously, I couldn’t ask for a better administration.
- Principal Hines and Assistant Principal Penn at Bellevue make a great administrative team. They unite to lead and inspire for their staff and students everyday!
- My son and I want to send a shout out to Mr. Walton, principal of J.B. Fisher Elementary. He has been a genuine leader during a challenging time and he has continually shown his care and support of the families in the Fisher community. We were so proud to see his over-the-top participation in this year’s Fun Run, and we love seeing him visit the virtual classes. He has found ways to be hands-on when none of us really can be. We’re glad to call Fisher home and so happy to have a committed leader like Mr. Walton at the helm!
- I would like to shout out the Summer Hill Preschool staff. They have been shining examples of leading with love. They have had many members of their staff suffer personal losses, and they have reached out to support one another. It is a blessing to work for this team, all of whom bring light and love each day to each of their students.

- Shout out to Principal Jennifer Moore and Assistant Principal Jacqueline Drye at Barack Obama Elementary, The School of Unlimited Potential! Both of these ladies are kind, approachable and always there to lend advice or point me in the right direction. These ladies are great leaders, easy to work with and fun to be around. When I think of them, it reminds me of the quote, “If you can laugh together, you can work together”. These ladies are hilarious! I have not had the pleasure to physically work together but I can only imagine a stronger mentorship when we return to physical school. These ladies model unity and it shows with my co-workers. I am proud to be a member of the team and grateful to work for such great administrators!
- Please shout out our principal, Col. David Hudson. When I say he goes above and beyond for his cadets, he does!! My family appreciates everything you do/did to keep the Franklin Knight families informed. When you are led by a leader like Col. Hudson, success is inevitable!!
- On behalf of Communities in Schools, I want to give a heartfelt shout-out to my administrators, Tanaia Hines and Vercynthia Penn. Ms. Hines is new to the district and to Richmond, but you would never know based on the way in which she's taken a deep dive into the community serving our Bellevue families. While she's still trying to navigate all the many parts of Richmond, she's become very familiar with the East End and has diligently taken the time to get to know our parents intimately, often needing to be reminded of the power of "saying no" due to her strong desire to meet the needs of our parents as requests come in at any time of the day/night/weekend! She also has a tireless passion towards positively impacting the relationships built with our staff, as she's always looking for ways to highlight successes and make our team strong! Mrs. Penn is such a fearless leader! She leads with her heart, especially when engaging with our students and families. Penn can take the "boring" out of any meeting! She is fashionably fierce and knows her stuff, but is also humble at admitting when she doesn't, genuinely making it a team effort in tackling many of the challenging parts of our work. I am honored to be a part of such a phenomenal team of women who set the tone for leadership in a way that makes you feel cared for, appreciated, and most importantly, part of the family. Love you, ladies!!!
- I would like to shout out Principal Angela Delaney from G.H. Reid Elementary. She has a huge heart and shows caring and compassion to the students and staff. I feel very fortunate to be a part of the G. H. Reid family! #leadwithlove
