Update Regarding Current Chief of Police Search
Sacramento State recently engaged an external search firm to help facilitate the recruitment of our next Chief of Police,
as shared with the campus community on March 23, 2021. The firm, Bob Murray & Associates (BM&A), is contracted to help source a robust and diverse pool of candidates from across the U.S. The firm also assisted the facilitation of four University-wide stakeholder meetings where the campus community shared their thoughts about what they were looking for in our next Chief of Police.
We are aware that questions have been raised regarding the role of the search firm for the Chief of Police recruitment. The main responsibility of the firm is to post, market, and proactively source qualified candidates who meet the required knowledge, skills, and abilities outlined for the position. The firm does not have any decision making authority regarding the screening, selection, or hiring of candidates. This responsibility lies with the search committee, the hiring manager, and the President.
The search committee is currently reviewing all applications and will be interviewing candidates in the next two weeks. We are extremely grateful for the search committee that has convened for this search as they are dedicating their time and commitment to serve in this vital role. The second student representative on the search committee is currently being filled in consultation with ASI.
The members of the committee are:
- Danielle Cochrane, Director of Education (ASI Board representative)
- Vacant (student at large)
- Ernest Uwazie (Faculty Senate representative)
- Diana Tate Vermeire (Inclusive Excellence representative)
- Shelby Moffat (President’s Office appointee)
- Frances Palu (Sac State Police Department representative)
- Tony Lucas (Administration and Business Affairs representative)
- Samuel Jones (Student Affairs representative)
- Madeleine Vadenais (Staff Assembly representative)
Upon interview completion, the search committee will recommend candidates to be invited for final town hall meetings with the entire campus community. Dates and times for these town halls will be communicated with the campus community soon.
The Chief of Police position is vital to our campus, and the incumbent will be dedicated to upholding the Sacramento State Police Department mission - to protect the life, property, and peace of mind of the students, faculty, staff and visitors of this university. Please contact my office at
