TUTORING WORKS. CAN YOU HELP?
Many thanks to all of you who made donations of school supplies or funds to purchase them for beginning of the year at Maryland School. In addition, our community partnership with Beatitudes Campus and Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Phoenix provided a back-to-school luncheon for all the staff as way to encourage them in their commitment for the year ahead. Staff members have expressed great appreciation for the outpouring of support.
Initial evaluations show that a very large number of students are performing significantly below expectations for their grade level and plans are being put in place for special interventions to give them extra assistance. You can help with this by volunteering an hour once a week to work with a student (K-8) in reading or math as a tutor and encouraging mentor. Times are set up by matching class times with what works for you. Please email Cathy Kim at firstname.lastname@example.org to let us know of your interest, get more info, or ask questions. Tutoring can be a very interesting and satisfying way to make a big difference in the life of a child!
ARTS COUNCIL PRESENTS A NEW ART EXHIBIT
DAVID POOL'S "HUMMINGBIRDS OF PHOENIX"
July 24 - Sept 19 | Worship Center Foyer
Hummingbirds beat their wings an average of 50 times per second, and visit 1,000 flowers each day for nutrition. These "hummers" flit and fly across yards and back porches in Phoenix to remind us that a connection can be made in the smallest (and briefest) of ways if you but look.
Make plans to stop by the foyer of the Worship Center this Sunday to take a look at the newest exhibition of the Beatitudes Arts Council by Photographer, David Pool, "Hummingbirds of Phoenix."
To purchase a work, please contact Beatitudes Arts Council member, Marcia Nix, at 602-274-8992. Thirty percent of the sale price helps to fund art projects at Church of the Beatitudes.
