HAPPY NEW YEAR!

COUNTDOWN TO STUDENT LED CONFERENCES….

Conferences will be scheduled as follows:

Wednesday, January 25 1 PM - 3 PM
Thursday, January 26   3 PM - 7 PM
Friday, January 27 8 AM - Noon

Thirty minute conference appointments with your child will be followed by a thirty minute open period to meet with teachers individually for brief discussions, if so desired.  Wednesday will be a half day with school dismissed at 11:57 am.  There is no school on Thursday or Friday due to conferences.    All WMS students/parents/guardians are encouraged and expected to participate. We hope to achieve 100% attendance!  Research shows that student-led conferences encourage students to take responsibility for their learning and perform better in school.  Parent attendance and support is critical to the success of this program.

The student accountability fostered by this model teaches responsibility and encourages students to develop a sense of ownership for their progress. More importantly, it encourages students and their parents or guardians to engage in discussions centered on academic progress.  SLCs also build self-confidence and provide training for their future.

HOW WILL IT WORK?

Your child will present a portfolio of work to you. The portfolio is a collection of representative work and self-reflective evaluations from all subject areas. Your child has been meeting regularly in a Seminar group with a teacher who provides guidance in organizing, preparing and practicing the presentation of this portfolio to you. Students will also share progress reports, progress on their smart goals and set a new goal for spring semester with you.  We hope that they have already shared their two goals for fall semester. You will set a goal for spring semester at the conference.

Thirty-minute blocks of time are scheduled for each conference. The teacher will act as a facilitator but will not be directly involved in the conference.  At the conclusion of each thirty minute conference you will have the opportunity to meet with any teacher on an individual basis for up to five minutes.  If you require a conversation that will take more than five minutes, you will need to schedule another time to meet with the teacher.  We hope that you have already been in communication with your child’s teachers if you have a concern.

HOW DO I SIGN UP?

You will need:

  • Your child’s Username and Password for their Google Classroom site (Frogrock Account)
  • The name of your child's SLC Facilitator (This information is available from your child or Ms. Orness.  It also shows up on their schedule as their zero period teacher.)
  • Your calendar so you know when you are available for the conference and to note what conference you choose
Directions for scheduling your conference will be available on our main web page beginning on January 9th.  Thank you ahead of time for participating in Student Led Conferences.

THANK YOU PTO!

Woodward teachers recently received approximately $3000 in mini-grant awards from our PTO. These requests will provide supplemental curriculum materials and activities to support classroom instruction. Grants included requests for headphones, disc golf equipment, a social emotional survey and much more.  Thank you, PTO, and to all of you who helped make our Fallapalooza Fundraiser a success. The programs at Woodward will be enhanced through these grants.

PTO NEWS
Welcome back to all Woodward families.  We hope you had a relaxing Winter Break and are enjoying the first few days of 2017!  Before the break, the PTO funded all the grant requests brought before the board.  Thank you to Julie Farley for organizing the grant applications and presenting to the board.  The grant information will be posted on the PTO website.  The next PTO meeting will be on Wednesday, January 11th at 9:30AM.  Mike Florian will be speaking about the Student Led Conferences.  We encourage you to attend and learn about how the conferences will take place.

8th Grade Parent Culture Fair Information Night
Culture Fair is an activity designed to help 8th grade students learn about their own cultural heritage.  Students choose a person from their family or another person, living or dead, who has in some way contributed to their cultural makeup.  Through oral interviews and additional research, students acquire an understanding of their focus person's life and culture.  The final product for Culture Fair consists of a paper and a display board which explore and illustrate elements of their person's life and culture.  Culture Fair night is May 18, 2017 from 6:30 - 8:00PM.  Students are required to attend.
On Thursday, January 5th, the 8th Grade Social Studies teachers invite you to attend our optional Parent Culture Fair Information Night.  It will be held from 6:30 - 7:30PM in the WMS Library.  During this session, parents will hear information on how they can support their child for this project and see examples of former student projects.  We hope to see you there!
