Opportunities to Get Connected and Involved!
International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) regularly receives requests from students and community members on how to meet Miamians from certain countries, regions, heritages, linguistic backgrounds and such. So, ISSS is offering International Connections events for students or community members who are looking to meet others who are from, have lived in, traveled to, want to travel to or are interested in a particular region, country, heritage, or linguistic/cultural background.
These International Connections events will be held from 5:15-6:45 pm at the International Student Center, MacMillan 017 with breakout rooms across MacMillan Hall. Activities and light refreshments will be provided. Attendees are welcome to share a game, activity, info about another upcoming event, or other ways to stay connected. Don't miss out on these opportunities to connect with others!
Also, Tea Tasting: A Sip Around the World will once again be offered from 7:00 - 9:30pm on October 6 in Armstrong Student Center Pavilion and is an opportunity to showcase a variety of tea-drinking cultures, try an assortment of different flavors from all over the world, and provide a space for all to relax and enjoy on a Thursday night. Students and student groups interested in hosting a Tea Tasting table and sharing tea/beverage with the community are invited to sign up.

Understand Work Authorization and SSNs!
International students in F-1 status are authorized to work on campus and must follow regulations for working hours and breaks.
A Social Security Number (SSN) is a nine-digit number used to report your wages from work to the government and to determine eligibility for Social Security benefits and tax filing. If you are employed in the U.S., you need a Social Security number to work. However, you do not need a Social Security Number before you start working. Once you receive a job offer you can apply for your Social Security Number.
| |
Note: F-1 students are prohibited to work off campus unless they receive authorization for:
-
Curricular Practical Training (CPT is for currently-enrolled F-1 students who wish to engage in off-campus employment that is directly related to their major field of study, e.g. an internship.)
-
Optional Practical Training (OPT is for students to gain experience in their major field of study after completion of program requirements.)
