Meet the New Curator at the Duke Art Museum. It Isn't Human.
Duke University's Nasher Museum of Art recently unveiled an exhibit curated not by humans, but by artificial intelligence. The exhibit, named “Dreams of Tomorrow: Utopia and Dystopian Visions,” was assembled by the popular generative AI platform, ChatGPT. Despite its high-speed curatorial process, the AI made some noticeable errors, like calling a painting a sculpture and featuring an unremarkable damaged bowl. On the other hand, the AI also surprised the museum’s staff by making unexpected yet intriguing connections, pairing artworks together that hadn't been thought of in relation. There's been a mixed reception in the art community, with some praising the innovation while others criticize it, believing curation should remain a solely human endeavor. This AI-curated exhibit is a glimpse into the future of technology in the arts and raises questions about AI’s expanding role in various sectors.
