Dear Sandra,
The easing of restrictions in New South Wales represents an important stepping stone for the whole country as vaccine rates continue to increase and certainty grows. With Victoria likely to follow not long after, for the first time in many months, we can look forward to new opportunities for growth as the nation opens up.

The growth of fraud over the past 12 months has highlighted the importance of cash in preventing such activities from occurring. According to the ACCC, over the last year phone-based scams have exploded by 30%. This has cost Australian consumers tens of millions of dollars, with the size of losses increasing significantly. A key common factor in the increase in fraud has been the way in which cashless payment options make such fraud easier. Cash has inherent advantages which prevent such fraud from occurring: it allows for clear budgeting, is used in face-to-face transactions that can be more easily verified as non-fraudulent. We all have a critical role to play in promoting the take-up of cash as restrictions ease: countering anti-cash narratives, and bringing to the public's attention the strengths of cash and the weaknesses of cashless payment options.
Last month's Strategic Direction teleconference once again highlighted the importance of the industry working together on industry issues. ATMIA has begun cross-industry discussions with ASIAL in reference to  Australia in the Review of Australia's Payment System   - the Availability and access to cash. Both associations will be calling on industry stakeholders to unite and support our cause to ensure cash remains part of the Australian Payment System. Further details will be released to our members later this month. Wishing our NSW members to remain safe as restrictions are eased and life to some extent returns to normality.
We can all look forward to brighter times ahead as other states follow.

Thanks
