Alumni Monthly Newsletter
April 2020
As we grapple with the uncertainty this pandemic brings, one thing we have found comfort in is hearing from alumni. This issue of the alumni e-newsletter aims to share some of the wonderful things alumni are doing right now as well as provide you with some Kent-related distractions — from stories of Kent Heroes to recorded faculty and student panels, and even a Kent Spotify playlist.

We hope you enjoy learning what some of your fellow alumni, current students, and Kent faculty are doing during this time. Interested in sharing what you are up to with the alumni network? Email:

Connect with Alumni

During this time of social distancing, don’t forget you can still connect digitally with fellow alumni.

Kent Heroes

Many of you are on the front lines or at home helping mitigate the spread of the virus. The resilience, strength, and creativity of the Kent School community is inspiring. Thank you. To help spread some light in these dark times, we want to share stories of how you are helping to flatten the curve and fight the pandemic. To celebrate your efforts, we have started a Kent Heroes series on our alumni Facebook and Instagram pages featuring alumni who are on the front lines — from healthcare workers and teachers, to volunteers and generous neighbors. Your work is invaluable and your Kent community is rallying around you. Let us know who you are and what you are doing to help during this turbulent time. To nominate a classmate for a Kent Hero spotlight or to share your own story, email: Please include a photo of you and/or your work fighting the pandemic for us to share on social media.

Kent Hero Spotlights

Elizabeth Ridgway ’12 was nominated by her classmate and friend, Emily O'Brien Tijerina '12. Below is part of the nomination Emily shared with the A&D office:

Elizabeth is a nurse at Sharon Hospital in CT and has been tirelessly treating patients throughout the current pandemic. Elizabeth never gives up and never stops working. She gives every bit of herself to her patients and then goes above and beyond outside of work to volunteer as an EMT with the Cornwall Volunteer Fire Department. The whole Ridgway family is so dedicated to their community and their relentless efforts are well deserving of some recognition. A Kent family through and through (Elizabeth and her siblings Rebecca and Ian are all Kent graduates). I’m so proud of the hard work Elizabeth continually puts into her job, protecting and caring for all her patients each day.
Becky Mitchell ’83 is using innovation and her sewing talents in this time of need to make masks and hats for healthcare workers. Becky shared the following:
I am making masks out of cotton with a hepa filter in the middle of the two layers, which can block out 99% of virus, pollution etc. I’m also making hats that the nurses can wear into the ICU so they can have a washable hat, because as we know there isn’t enough to go around! I never in my wildest dreams would have thought that my sewing skills would help with anything.
Allison Broeffle ’83 nominated Becky for this Kent Hero spotlight and concluded her nomination of Becky’s work creating masks with a hepa filter by noting, “Father Sill would say that is self-reliance!”
