Welcome back to school!

As we prepare to start another school year of distance learning, the ELLMA office  sends a warm welcome to our teachers and community members in these tumultuous times. Instead of cleaning our classrooms, we are checking our technology. Instead of arranging desks, we are organizing our Zoom teaching spaces. These are indeed unusual teaching times!
We know that our immigrant and multilingual families continue to be acutely affected during this crisis, so the efforts you are putting into starting the year strong for your ELLs are appreciated. Thank you! The ELLMA office is here to support you in these efforts to welcome your students back and accelerate their language development:
In this issue,  you will find information about ELLMA-hosted webinars, resources and tips for starting strong with language learners, and updates on ELL Ambassador recruitment.

ELL Instructional Resources

Our ELLs need our instructional and social-emotional support now more than ever.  Helpful resources and recorded webinars can be found on the ELL Page of OUSD Teacher Central Google Site as well as resources such as the Essential Practices adapted for Distance Learning filled with links to aligned resources and examples. As we continue to learn with and from you, we will add to our google site so please check back often.
The following resources are helpful for supporting specific populations of students in distance learning:
See below for upcoming webinars. Zoom links will be available closer to the date on OUSD Teacher Central.

Meeting Newcomers' Whole Child Needs

We know our newcomers already disproportionately face steep challenges and barriers to accessing and succeeding in school, and this is deeply exacerbated during the Covid-19 pandemic. Please know there are resources, staff and community partners you can connect with to break down these barriers. The document below has more information on requesting translators/interpreters, supporting students and families with dealing with issues like technology access or unemployment, and helpful lists of outside resources your students or families might need. ELL Ambassadors Corner

Hi teachers! We are in the process of recruiting ELL Ambassadors for the 2020-21 school year. This is a stipended position at each site. ELL Ambassadors attend four meetings over the course of the school year where they receive guidance on supporting their school with ELPAC testing, reclassification, SELLS development and more.
We will be reaching out to last year's ELL Ambassadors to see if they are interested in continuing with this work. If you are interested, please speak to your principal and/or email Tom Felix with your name, role, and school site!

Help us spread the word!

ELLMA is recruiting social workers to support newcomers across OUSD.

Newcomer social workers work across OUSD’s secondary newcomer programs to address obstacles and meet basic needs to support student success in school. Part time and full time postings are available.

In addition to applying at the links above, interested candidates are encouraged to email Tom Felix.
We'd love to hear from you! Please contact James with communications inquiries.
