IUP Values Me
Student Spotlight: Caio Gomes
Caio is pursuing an undergraduate degree in political science with a minor in Spanish. He is a member of the Cook Honors College and expects to graduate in 2024. Caio serves as the lead news writer and cultural highlights contributor for the Penn and as the Tradition Keepers chair for the IUP Ambassadors. He is both an IUP Promising Scholar and a Pittsburgh Promise Executive Scholar. Caio is president of the Latino Student Organization (LaSO), a role in which he promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion education and awareness, including through the LaSO Para la Cultura series. Through his leadership and that of his fellow officers, LaSO has reinvented the Unity Ball, a formal occasion open to the entire IUP community, previously held on an annual basis. (Please see this week’s highlighted event for Saturday!) We thank you, Caio!
Staff Spotlight: Lisa Price
Lisa is a professor in the Department of Communication Disorders, Special Education, and Disability Services and program director for the Speech-Language Pathology program. She is a past recipient of both the University Senate Distinguished Faculty Award for Teaching and the Ray Coppler Disability Awareness Award. Lisa has been a long-term member of the College of Education and Communications Diversity and Inclusion Standing Committee (DISC). She helped identify a conceptual framework, write the guiding action plan, build a D2L repository of resources, and continue efforts to achieve the committee’s goals. Lisa’s work with DISC also equipped her to lead her program to increase its DEI efforts. The program has now written DEI statements, changed program-level student learning outcomes, updated curriculum, increased use of equity pedagogy, improved infusion of content across all courses, designed a Passport to Culture program requirement for all students, and designed a survey tool to measure change over time in student attitudes and beliefs. Lisa is now working to jump-start meaningful collaborations with other campus departments and offices. We thank you, Lisa!
A note about IUP Values Me: Each week, we will highlight one student and one faculty or staff member to shine a spotlight on their great work assisting our campus community with diversity, equity, and inclusion and civil rights awareness.
