Welcome to the summer Commodore Connection, an email newsletter series designed for families of incoming first-year students. In these highly uncertain times, Vanderbilt is committed to keeping you informed as you all prepare for Move-In Day. You’ll receive the Commodore Connection throughout the summer to introduce academic, student health and well-being, and other resources important to the student experience. We also encourage you to visit the university’s COVID-19 website frequently, as information is updated there regularly. We hope you will be active members of the Vanderbilt family and participate in your students’ journey of discovery here.

Move-In Day – August 21

First-year student move-in is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 21. Students will be provided with a specific move-in time (between 7 a.m. and noon) with their room assignment information. Room assignment information will be sent to all incoming first-year students on or before Aug. 1. Prior to Aug. 21, we will be preparing the halls for your arrival and as a result, will not be able to accommodate early move-in requests. Please plan your travel to Nashville accordingly.

Student Health

Immunization and Tuberculosis Screening Compliance: The State of Tennessee and Vanderbilt University require certain immunizations for all incoming students depending on their degree plan. Incoming students must also take a tuberculosis screening survey and have testing (only if applicable) after the survey is completed. It is recommended that these documents be uploaded to the Student Health Portal by May 15.

Mandatory Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP):

Vanderbilt requires all eligible students to be covered by a health insurance plan that is comparable to or exceeds the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) administered by Academic HealthPlans (AHP). Your student may choose to waive SHIP by submitting a waiver form by the deadline of Aug. 1. You are encouraged to review Vanderbilt’s waiver policies. Students may waive SHIP beginning May 17 by completing the waiver form. Eligible students who do not waive SHIP will be enrolled in coverage and billed for the SHIP premium.

Academic Advising

Academic advising is offered through the school or college in which your student is enrolled. In late May or early June, students will receive a registration packet with detailed instructions about the registration process and academic advising. We strongly encourage you to allow your students to take ownership in this process, as it sets the stage for their academic experience.

Tuition Payment Options

VANDY Plan, available through Higher One, offers an interest-free monthly tuition payment option. The payment plan is available for a small enrollment fee and includes personal account service, automated account information 24 hours a day, and access to your account through their website. The deadline to enroll is Aug. 31 for the fall semester (payments begin May 15) and Dec. 31 for the spring semester (payments begin Oct. 15).

Immersion Vanderbilt

Immersion Vanderbilt is a degree requirement that provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to pursue their interests through experiential learning. This learning experience takes place in and outside the classroom and concludes with the completion of a final project.

Our students’ families are a vital part of the Vanderbilt community. We hope to see you this fall for a weekend of fun and learning about your student’s experience on campus.
