FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK
Hello BHS Community:
We are settling into the pattern of school as we round into our third full week. Routines are beginning to become more established and classes are beginning to dig deeper into coursework. This is both comforting for students as they begin to more fully understand what to expect in their classes, and also a weight as coursework begins to get more up to a normal speed and students work to calibrate their schedules and priorities as they balance their classes. Teachers will continue to push executive functioning skills around time management and schedules through the use of planners, timers, or other best practices for pacing. Students can always reach out to their teachers or counselor should they need support. We are here for you!
Next week BHS Admin will begin grade level meetings with our students as we work to create a culture of respect and safety at school. We will be specificially reviewing our school board policies and procedure related to Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying (HIB), alongside Sexual Harassment. We are fortunate enough to be able to include community partners from the Bainbridge Island Police Department (BIPD) and Bainbridge Youth Services (BYS) in these presentations and share the distinct yet connected roles that we play in supporting students should they need to report harm to themselves or another. Students have been given the opportunity to pose questions that will be answered during our time together as well. We are grateful for the opportunity to gather in space and commit to the ways that we work to keep our community safe. Thank you for your partnership in this aspect as well.

HOMECOMING DANCE ~ OCTOBER 8

Homecoming 2022!

ASB/Leadership is excited to host a semi formal Homecoming dance on October 8, from 7-10 PM, in the BHS Commons! Tickets are $10 and will be available for purchase online beginning next week. Leadership students will distribute the physical tickets the week leading up to the event. Leadership students are also working with local restaurants to offer specials to students who dine locally - we will provide information on that as it becomes available.
WELCOME NEW BHS STAFF!

We are thrilled to announce our new staff members (and those who have taken on new roles) at BHS. They join an already stellar team, and we are happy they are here!

Amalia Gonzalez-Kahn ~ Associate Principal

Hi, I am Amalia Gonzalez-Kahn, the new Associate Principal for Last Names L to Z.  I came to Bainbridge High School from Tyee High School in SeaTac, Washington to be closer to my family (with a number of Spartan alumni in the mix!).  The best part of my job so far has been getting to know students and their families.  Please don't hesitate to get in contact just to introduce yourself or if there are ways I can help support you here at BHS.

Luke Ande ~ BISD Athletic Director

Luke has vast experience overseeing public school athletic programs. For more than 10 years, Luke served as Athletic Director for Issaquah High School and, most recently, as the Athletic Director for the entire Issaquah School District. Before becoming a school and district administrator, Luke taught physical education for five years in Seattle Public Schools. "As the new BISD Athletic Director, I am excited to build positive relationships with students, staff, and the community," Luke said. "I look forward to supporting all the different programs and highlighting student achievements."

Venus Km-Wr ~ Student Assistance Professional

Venus brings over 20 years of experience in Education and Training. Some of the positions she has held are: YWCA Legal Advocate, Adult/Youth Facilitator, Adult/Youth Education Manager, Employment Specialist, Case Manager. Venus launched a Youth STEM program in 2020-2021. Fun Fact: Venus was Miss Kitsap County for America Strong in 2020 and 2021.

Eve Medina ~ Student Support Specialist

I previously worked for BISD from 2017-2020 and I am also the proud parent of a 2020 BHS grad. My love for BHS and the BI community motivates me to commute all the way from Colorado monthly. I am excited to build trusting relationships with staff and students.

Sandy Halbert ~ Nurse

I am excited to be at BHS after a 6-year hiatus. Fun fact about me is I worked at all of the other schools before my big gap so I have seen many of the students who are at BHS now when they were in elementary school. I'm looking forward to the day when I can see each other face to face in the health room. When I am not at school I enjoy learning to play golf, playing pinball, pool, board games, tennis and pickleball. I am a Seahawks fan and I'm looking forward to getting to watch BHS sports again!

Vann Berryman ~ Math

I was born and raised in Gig Harbor, taught in Wenatchee the last four years. In my spare time (what's that?) when I'm not helping with debate or SAGA or link crew or coaching volleyball, I like to cook, drive around my new town of Bainbridge, or play Ultimate Frisbee.

Jim Corsetti ~ Science

It's my 27th year in education and I've been a paraeducator, a teacher, a principal and athletic director. After the last 17 years of being an administrator, I'm thrilled to be back in the classroom and teaching. I'm telling everyone I've been promoted. : ) I've always been about teaching and learning first and foremost, and while I've always enjoyed my other roles, my heart is in the classroom.

Meloni Courtway ~ Culinary Arts

I’m so excited to join BHS. Previous to teaching high school culinary I worked as the consumer science teacher at Woodward. I’m also a professionally trained chef and food writer.

Lia Swanson ~ Career Guidance Specialist

This is my 8th year at BHS, where I have previously been the CTE Secretary and FACSE teacher. I am so excited to work with students this year to sort through their goals after high school and feel empowered and successful in their future opportunities. In my home life I am an avid runner and love to spend time adventuring with my three little kids.

Additional New Staff Members
