COVID-19 Update

OUSD Supports New Bay Area Restrictions
Dear Oakland Unified Community,

As you know, the coronavirus situation in our region and our nation is evolving quickly. It was just three days ago that I ordered all schools to close. This afternoon, public health officials issued an even more significant order: nearly all Bay Area residents are ordered to shelter in place for the next three weeks. I am writing to share how this will impact OUSD’s current operations and services.

  • District operations will continue: The District remains open, with non-essential personnel directed to work from home where feasible. Essential personnel who are required to come to work will need to follow social distancing practices. More information detailing essential services will be forthcoming.
We know this will be disruptive to daily life, but this short-term inconvenience will prevent a catastrophic long term impact on the public health of our community. The Alameda County Public Health Department will be posting Frequently Asked Questions to address specific issues on their COVID-19 webpage.
We are living in uncharted territory and there are challenging days before us. However, this community knows how to pull together. Even in the face of uncertainty, Oaklanders were feeding our students today. I know that we will continue to work together on behalf of our students, families and our city.
Please take seriously the recommendations in the shelter-in-place directive. This is an all hands on deck time. Only together can we mitigate the potential spread of the coronavirus.
