Dear #RPSStrong Family,
Tonight's updates:
| |
| Black History Month – To celebrate Black History Month, every day in February, we'll be highlighting some of our amazing Black students and community members on our Instagram account. To kick things off, Imani Adewale, senior at Armstrong HS and published author, is sharing her story!
| |
Visit our website for a list of great school and community events celebrating Black history all month long. For example, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is hosting two great activities for families on Sunday, February 5. At noon, participate in a Black history art project inspired by an object from the VMFA collection; and at 1 pm, join artist Hamilton Glass and videographer Myles Brown to create a poster for the 5th annual RVA Community Makers event! Both events are free and open to the public. For groups of eight or more children, please email youthstudio@vmfa.museum.
Also make sure to check out the 2023 Black History Tour presented by the Cary ES! The self-guided tour includes historically significant landmarks, museums, art, and Black-owned businesses across Richmond. See flyers below for details.

| School Board Appreciation Month – Did you know that February is also School Board Appreciation Month? Please join me in thanking all nine members of the Richmond City School Board for their unwavering support of our students, staff, and families!
| |
| School Board Meeting – Speaking of the School Board, there's a budget work session tonight at 6 pm at MLK MS. You can watch the livestream of the meeting in English or Spanish. Please note that there won't be public comment at this meeting.

- Shout-out to Mrs. Rhonda Young-Barfield & Teshawn Cunningham! They are the only Head Start family service workers at MLK Preschool. They support all of our Head Start students, staff and families. These ladies display what it means to be a family service worker every day! They are visible in our schools daily. They assist the teachers, students, staff, and families. They are available whenever needed. They lead and serve with love. They have been such a blessing to the MLK Preschool team! We are truly grateful.
- I'm grateful for the opportunity to work with such a fine group of educators as those at Richmond Virtual Academy. Not one of them takes for granted the awesome responsibility of reaching and teaching our scholars. I see and hear passion as the teachers engage in their classrooms. You know their efforts are grabbing the students' attention when the children (and adults in the room) ask some very thoughtful follow-up questions at the end of a lesson. I believe the futures are bright for these precious RVA Owls. Hooty Hoot!
- Shout-out to 6th grade principal, Cornelius Smith at Lucille Brown Middle School, for listening to the concerns of a parent with such kindness and wisdom. His response was quick, honest, and full of compassion. The children and parents of Lucille Brown are fortunate to have Mr. Smith in their corner.
- I would like to shout-out Ms. James at River City Middle School for her support and advice, and her care and dedication for her students. We love you, Ms. James!
- Shout-out to the incredible 6th grade admin team at River City for their strong, competent, and compassionate leadership. We appreciate your strength, patience, and understanding. Mrs. Estrada, Mrs. Weisser, and Mrs. Woodson are a powerful, positive, passionate team who show up every day for their staff and students.
- Shout-out to Mrs. LP! You are a true wonder to have in my child's life. We appreciate everything you have done for us and the extra miles you take for us. Thanks, LP, you're the best!!!!
- Sarah Reilly is an amazing educator! The division is lucky to have such a knowledgeable and passionate person supporting our teachers and students. Her follow through and follow up should be commended. We see you and appreciate your work, Ms. Reilly!!
- The STEAM teacher at Linwood Holton Elementary School is so special! Ms. Hawley recently mailed a handwritten letter to my kids thanking them for the holiday gift we gave her, and they were thrilled to receive mail from a teacher. Thank you, Ms. Hawley, for always being such a positive light for our community and for all of the exposure you provide our students!
- I recently asked my daughter who her favorite teacher has been at Holton Elementary and she answered without any hesitation that it was Ms. Robinson. Ms. Robinson taught my daughter last year, and she continues to make a positive impact in my daughter's life through their daily interactions. I appreciate all of the time and energy Ms. Robinson has poured into the students at Holton and I hope she knows the lasting impact she is making in so many lives.
- RPS is grateful to have interventionists and specialists like Ms. Sellers, Ms. Dailey, and Ms. Ceja. Your PD was important and educational at PHSSA. You are appreciated!
- Sending a huge thank you to Kirstie Hein Sadler and Julz Suder for their advocacy for the arts, not only in our school system, but in our communities and beyond. The fine arts are vital to a blossoming mind, and vital to our children's self expression! These two women live that devotion and we thank them wholeheartedly.
- Extending a heartfelt thank you to Principals Sears, Murray, Bell, and their entire admin and testing teams at TJ, John Marshall, and Armstrong for their phenomenal support during the recent WIDA testing. All our students and LIEP specialists received support and experienced a flawless and smooth testing experience.
- Thanks to Ms. Haynes at G.H. Reid for being compassionate and supportive!
