We are thrilled to begin this new academic year with you and are looking forward to all we will accomplish together. We want Evergreen to be a place where all are welcomed and each of us can contribute our unique strengths to building our shared community. Today, we begin opening for in-person operations for the first time in 19 months. We have all been working hard together to make this happen. Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been challenging, but we have met the challenge successfully and we have done so together. Working together has always been our greatest strength. Please be patient through this transition and let us know how we can support you.

At Evergreen, we strive to realize our commitments to racial equity, social justice, environmental stewardship, and service in the public interest. The inequities experienced during a pandemic create an even greater need to see our work through a lens of diversity, equity, and inclusion. We look forward to the contributions that you will make to these efforts. Our staff and faculty are here to support and help guide each student toward their degree, even as we adapt to the pandemic. We will have staff available on red square this week to help address any questions or needs you might have. We prioritize the health and safety of our community.

For students, we have many employment opportunities on campus and we hope you will consider a role that might interest you. We encourage each new and returning student to embrace every opportunity to meet new people, learn about campus, and begin the work of developing a meaningful education that is entirely your own. Our community is not limited by the boundaries of each campus. For students, with graduation in your sights, know that you’ll join more than 45,000 successful alumni who are using their Evergreen education to create meaningful lives and to build the kind of world in which we all want to live. As we begin a year-long celebration of Evergreen’s 50th anniversary, we hope you will join us in reflecting on the many contributions to our world from Evergreen alumni, students, faculty, and staff, while encouraging and inviting each other to engage in new opportunities to make an impact today.

Thank you for joining us in this exciting journey. We’re happy you’re here.

Sincerely,

John Carmichael, PhD, Interim President
