NAU's 17th President, José Luis Cruz Rivera

Message from the President

Dear Parent,
Just a few short weeks ago, we marked the beginning of the 17th Presidency of Northern Arizona University and I just want to share with you how honored and proud I am to join this strong and vibrant institution.
I am so thankful for the warm NAU welcome we have received. My wife, Rima, and our son, Álvaro, are happily settled into our Flagstaff home which is walking distance—trust me, I have walked it—from the NAU campus.
I was drawn to NAU because of its reputation for providing a high quality, student-centered educational experience and for the beautiful environment that surrounds our mountain campus. But there is so much more. This is a University that, for more than 120 years, has worked to transform the lives of countless individuals, families, and communities who have entrusted it with their aspirations to live their best lives while becoming their best selves. I continue to be impressed by the welcoming and caring faculty and staff who are dedicated to your student’s success and wellbeing.
NAU’s focus on student success is part of what makes this university so special, and I can assure you that under my leadership we are going to remain committed to the success of ALL of our nearly 30,000 students.
I am thrilled to be able to welcome your student to NAU as we look forward to being back in full force for a vibrant and enriching academic and student life experience this fall. NAU will remain nimble and able to quickly adapt to new developments and we are committed to providing our NAU community with prompt and clear communications about any alterations to protocols that may need to be implemented at any point. Please look for emails and check for updates on the Jacks are Back website.
NAU is EXACTLY where I want to be, leading a world-class university as we embark on this time of unparalleled opportunity.  I trust that NAU is EXACTLY where your student wants to be, part of a community that cares about them and their future of unending opportunity.
I hope to see you at move in, during Family Weekend, or any time throughout the year. Until then—Go Jacks!
José Luis

Invite your first-year Lumberjack to apply to EDGE Leadership today!

The EDGE Leadership Program is a fun, unique way for first-year students to kick off their NAU experience. Your student will connect with their Lumberjack family while exploring their leadership identity, expanding their NAU knowledge, and gaining confidence in starting their college journey.
Working in small groups, students participate in workshops, presentations, and activities that strengthen bonds and challenge participants. Students will also explore their values, strengths, and character in collaboration with experienced NAU students. All COVID-19 safety measures will be in effect during this in-person program.
Encourage your students to apply soon. Registrations will be accepted on a rolling basis until July 23, 2021, or until the program reaches capacity (100 participants). We look forward to meeting your new Lumberjack during EDGE on August 16-19, 2021. The cost to participate is $100. Reach out to TheEdge@nau.edu if the cost of participation is prohibitive.

Get started early with summer Academic Success Centers services

Now is the perfect time for your student to begin preparing for the fall semester. Summer is a great time to start analyzing your course schedule and identifying what academic resources will be most important to utilize throughout the semester. The Academic Success Centers provide free academic support for over 100 classes across campus. Students can receive one-on-one tutoring, group-led supplemental instruction, or direct guidance on learning strategies such as reading and writing tips, study skills, and advice on note taking. Remember, at the collegiate level, the vast majority of students use academic support like tutoring to be successful.
Work with your student to start making an academic plan for the fall semester today. As part of that plan, your student can call the ASCs at 928-523-5524 or schedule a video conference by emailing tutoring@nau.edu to integrate tutoring and other programming into their academic plan. Students can also contact the ASCs to set up a free 30-minute academic consultation before classes start. The time to prepare for fall is now, so please reach out to the ASCs to help your student succeed.

New professional development classes start at $149

NAU is committed to the health and safety of students, faculty, and staff and follows CDC’s recommended guidelines on COVID-19. Not every photo in this e-newsletter will precisely represent these guidelines, as we aim to accurately present the NAU experience for you and balance that need with imagery that reflects the COVID-19 policies we have in place.
