American Epilepsy Society AES Connections AES Connections
There is increasing awareness and concerns that discoveries made in animal studies often fail to translate into clinically relevant therapies. In September 2012, an international group of epilepsy investigators and representatives from funding agencies and patient advocate organizations participated in the first Joint ILAE/AES Translational Workshop that took place in London, UK. Their goal was to create a roadmap to optimize preclinical epilepsy research and lead to new transformative treatments for people with epilepsies, including anti-epileptogenic, drug-resistant, and anti-comorbidity therapies. The proceedings of this workshop were recently published as an Epilepsia Supplement [(2013), vol 54, Suppl. 5].
FDA Releases Marijuana Webpage
Dear Colleagues,
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) understands that caregivers and patients are looking for treatment options for unmet medical needs. In some instances, patients or their caregivers are turning to marijuana in an attempt to treat conditions such as seizures and chemotherapy-induced nausea. To date, limited information has been publicly available on FDA’s role and activities on the use of marijuana to treat these conditions.
Today, FDA has released a Web page, FDA and Marijuana, that provides information on how marijuana is currently regulated for medical use; FDA’s role in overseeing the development of clinical trials involving marijuana; and how FDA’s role relates to the activities of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). The Web page will be updated as new information becomes available.
Thank you,
Deborah J. Miller, Ph.D., M.P.H., M.S.N., R.N.
Excitement Abounds at Recent Pipeline Conference
An event that began 22 years ago as a conference focused on how to do clinical trials, has grown and morphed into the annual Epilepsy Pipeline Conference, hosted by the Epilepsy Foundation.  This year’s conference was held June 5-7 in San Francisco and brought together decision-makers with a stake in the field of epilepsy treatment, therapeutic innovation, product development, even an 11-year-old boy.
