The History of the BHS Contest & Judging System

with Kevin Keller

Longtime judge and barbershop historian Kevin Keller shares his meticulous research into the history of contests and judging in the Barbershop Harmony Society. Kevin invites us into a deeper understanding of our past, and the powerful impact that the contest experience has on so many barbershop singers.

We examine the 1980’s and early 90’s in terms of what is going on in judging and how competitors are reacting. We see many attempts to improve the system but the system will show that overhaul is required.

Interstate Rivals Cheer Drayton Justus

Past champ Drayton Justus (Gentlemen's Agreement, 1971) still looks good in his red tux, and still has that characteristic twinkle in his eye, when his old friends the Interstate Rivals (1987) paid a visit last month. "We're here to honor the mighty awesome Drayton Justus," lead Joe Connolly said, "One of the all-time great Barbershoppers and human beings to ever grace the planet." 2021 International Convention:

Changes to Quartet Qualification Options

With the announcement on January 26 that there will be not be an in-person chorus contest in Cleveland, many have asked about the quartet contest. Singing Valentines during a pandemic

An annual highlight of barbershop life—and a significant revenue source for many groups—seems unlikely to happen in 2021 due to the global pandemic. Consider these safety concerns around face-to-face Singing Valentines, and potential alternative opportunities.
Within your own community of singers, your risk tolerance for being together might be manageable; a quartet might be willing to meet together, disciplined in keeping safe distances, and remain relatively “bubbled” together in quarantine. But when it comes to bringing music into other people’s homes, workplaces, and other public settings, a deeper conversation must take place. People who willingly gather together to sing might not be welcome when they show up unannounced in someone else’s environment.
