- I wanted to shout-out our amazing PTA secretary at Broad Rock ES who comes in every morning to help with parent drop-off. Then she comes into the building and helps with late arrivals. Mrs. Sharon is absolutely amazing and deserves a shout-out.
- A gigantic shout-out to Michelle Hudacsko! Michelle is, by far, the most responsive and organized person I have ever had the privilege of working with. She is a true asset to Richmond Public Schools! Thank you, Michelle!
- Ms. Craig in exceptional education is my 1st grader's favorite teacher at John B. Cary. She talks about her all the time and how much fun she has working with her. She teaches effectively and has helped my daughter come along even further in her education. She said reading is now her 2nd favorite subject because Ms. Craig makes it fun (she hated it last year).
- Mr. Bennett, exceptional education coordinator at Cary Elementary, is the real MVP. He will do anything he can to support our students. Not only that, but he is the crossing guard extraordinaire, outside in 32-degree weather, rain, and wind still directing traffic and welcoming families. He also made our 504 meeting painless and efficient. He shows great leadership daily and I don't think exceptional education staff get enough recognition. Their jobs are tough!
- Shout-out to Mr. Thompson at John B. Cary! He is an extraordinary exceptional education teacher and is always ready to collaborate and problem-solve to make sure that all of our Cougars get what they need. All of us here at Cary benefit greatly from his expertise as well as his kind spirit. Thank you, Mr. Thompson!
- Ms. Humphreys at Cary Elementary has been a fantastic teacher and mentor, inspiring my child to engage in class with confidence and critical discourse. She stepped up graciously to support all 5th grade students in the wake of a sudden teacher's departure. We are so appreciative of all she does!
- Mrs. Cauthorne is a tremendous resource for kids navigating socio-emotional challenges. She has been an essential support for my “tween” as she finds her way as a new kid in school. John B. Cary is so fortunate to have a robust socio-emotional curriculum.
- Shout-out to the Huguenot HS administration and the Care and Safety team!

| 2023-24 School Applications – The application window for families to submit open enrollment, specialty school, and governor’s school applications for the 2023-24 school year is now open via the Enroll RPS Portal. Students may apply for:
- Any specialty school for which they are eligible (specialty schools include Franklin Military Academy, Open High School, Richmond Community High School, Governor’s STEM Academy at Richmond Technical Center, and the IB Diploma Programme at Thomas Jefferson High School (for rising 11th-grade students))
- Out-of-zone schools via the open enrollment lottery (maximum of three school choices)
- Patrick Henry School of Science and Arts (charter school) via a separate open enrollment lottery (if eligible)
- Appomattox Regional Governor’s School and/or Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School (the application for CodeRVA is managed separately by that school)
A few important notes:
- Families will have until 4:30 pm on December 1, 2022, to submit specialty and governor’s school applications, and until 4:30 pm on February 1, 2023, to submit open enrollment applications.
- We unfortunately cannot accept late applications for any reason. Please plan accordingly.
- As long as your application is submitted before the deadline, the timing of your submission will have no impact on the outcome.
