As many of you are aware, in October 2020, the namesake of our Stan Richards School of Advertising and Public Relations made racially offensive comments during a meeting of his former company, The Richards Group. The comments made by Richards led to many strong feelings from members of our community and we have done our very best to listen and learn from the comments and concerns we have received.
To help determine the best way for our college to respond, we initiated a process to gather community feedback and input with help from two outside consultants who prepared reports of findings and personal recommendations based on their learnings. We also collected input and ideas from students and leaders throughout our college. All of this extensive feedback formed the basis of our report in response to this incident, which I encourage you to read here. This report contains many actions we will take in response to your input, along with links to other resources received during our process.
We are proud of our College’s strong community and caring culture and we strongly affirm our steadfast commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. At the same time, we also acknowledge that we have room for improvement. We have already begun taking many actions, and we are committed to taking many more actions in the weeks, months, and years ahead. We vow to learn from this incident and improve our college and community, and you can read about our ongoing and new strategic goals in our updated diversity, equity, and inclusion strategic action plan available here.
I thank everyone who has participated in our listening sessions and shared their experiences and insights during our feedback solicitation process. I also thank everyone for their patience during this year-long process, which took far longer than we originally hoped or expected.
Creating and maintaining the type of community we aspire to have will require an ongoing commitment to open dialog and candid discussions. If you have any questions, concerns, or comments in response to this report, please feel free to reach out to me directly at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We look forward to embarking on the important and necessary work ahead, and to achieving positive and enduring results for our community. Thank you for everything you do to make Moody College a welcoming and inclusive place.
