Malavika Kannan at ALAN

Malavika Kannan
Debut author Malavika Kannan (The Bookweaver’s Daughter) participated in the 2020 ALAN Workshop last month. Kannan and other featured authors, Kim Johnson (This is My America) and Mark Oshiro (Each of Us a Desert), inspired attendees with their panel discussion titled, "Social Activists as Writers." Steve Bickmore, former ALAN president, collected responses written by this year's participants on his blog, Dr. Bickmore's YA Wednesday. Alice Hays of California State University, Bakersfield, wrote:

"While I am always in awe over the talented authors that I hear, I was particularly blown away by Malavika Kannan who wrote an #ownvoices book titled, The Bookweaver’s Daughter. At the age of 19, she has already participated in multiple forms of resistance, beginning with the Pulse Shooting in Florida that occurred during her junior year of high school. You may be familiar with her viral Huffington Post article, "I Led my High School’s Walkout to Demand Gun Reform. Here’s What I Learned."

"In addition to her writing, she started The Homegirl Project intended to empower women of color. What I found particularly fascinating about her, and the other authors in her panel (Mark Oshiro and Kim Johnson) is that they all saw fantasy as a way of exploring social justice issues, and ultimately inspiring activism. This is something that I am incredibly interested in, as fantasy is my favorite genre, while activism is my favorite form of pedagogy. While Malavika praised previous activists for paving the road thus far, and claims to merely be picking up the torch, she is also passing it on to others, and I look forward to continuing to foster activism through young adult literature with books like hers, and the others on her panel!"

Happy New Year from Tanglewood

Happy New Year
As 2020 draws to a close, the entire world can breathe a collective sigh of relief as what feels like one of the worst years in history finally ends.
Did you know the first recorded celebration of the New Year was among the ancient Babylonians? The New Year was celebrated at the first full moon between March and April—not January 1st at all! January 1st didn’t become the "new year" until Julius Caesar introduced 90 days into his Julian calendar design, thus birthing the calendar we use today. Countries all over the world celebrate New Year’s Eve, and many believe ringing out the old year in style will bring luck in the year to come.

Although New Year’s Eve celebrations may look a bit different this year, we at Tanglewood wish you and your family a healthy, happy, and safe holiday season.

Working from Home: A Tanglewood Take

by Gracie (Editorial Intern)

For my own safety, and the safety of the people I live with, I made the difficult decision to remain virtual my senior year of college. Giving up my senior year was not easy, and I miss my classmates, professors, and my home every day. However, while the COVID-19 pandemic certainly has not been easy on anyone, it did open some interesting doors for me. I’ve had the great privilege of working at Tanglewood since May, and thanks to COVID throwing a wrench in the internship plans of many students, I was able to continue working through my first semester. Having real-world experience in the publishing industry—and being able to keep up with school while still working with Tanglewood—will open so many doors for me in the future, and I could not be happier with my decision. I have effectively been able to get a jump-start on my professional life by giving up my college life. Where one door closes, another opens.
Gracie & Juliette Cute Cat Content
Although staying home was a blessing in disguise, I am certain I’m not the only one who has felt isolated at home. To ease some of the loneliness, I adopted a cat, who I’ve named Juliette. She contributes a great deal to my work at Tanglewood, primarily by walking across my keyboard whenever I’m trying to read submissions. Even as I write this, she’s sitting in my lap, proofreading every word I type. COVID has left so many things uncertain for everyone, but I am comforted in the fact that through the uncertainty, I gained a constant: a pet that will go where I go, and see what I see, wherever I may end up.
