Spring Plant Sale & Other Events at Liberty Hall
May News & Events
Spring has finally arrived in central Kentucky, and the LHHS garden is coming to life! Bring a little life to your own garden or pick something up for Mother’s Day at our once-a-year spring plant sale, Saturday May 12 from 10 am – noon. For just a few dollars, you can purchase plants such as hydrangeas, foxgloves, and peonies, sourced directly from our gardens.
May is a wonderful month to plan your visit to our four acre site. The Brown family initially raised vegetables and fruit here but as time passed, the family added more ornamental touches to the grounds. Today, in addition to our famous boxwoods, visitors will enjoy flowers representing past gardens and hardy native plants ensuring that something will be blooming all summer long!
History & Collections
Roses in the Liberty Hall Gardens
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, roses were a main feature of the Liberty Hall gardens. In Mary Yoder Brown Scott's gardening journal from 1866 to 1913, she records planting and care instructions on various flowering plants, including roses, violets, irises, poppies, hollyhocks and ferns.
Around 1913, Kentucky artist Paul Sawyier painted this scene of the Liberty Hall gardens below. By the 1930s, the roses were so overgrown that they were referred to as the "rose jungle".
