DCN: A Director's Preparation for the First Rehearsal

SDCF invites you to attend an essential conversation!
Directors May Adrales, Anne Kauffman and Lonny Price will discuss how
they prepare for their first rehearsal. For anyone interested in how
different directors approach this process and lay the groundwork.

There will be time for a question & answer session with attendees.

About our guests: 

MAY ADRALES: May is a freelance theatre director based in New York City and has helmed several world premieres including JC Lee’s Luce (LCT3); Katori Hall’s Whaddabloodclot!!! (Williamstown Theater Festival); In This House at Two River Theatre Company; A. Rey Pamatmat’s Edith Can Shoot Things and Hit Them (Actors Theatre of Louisville) and after all the terrible things I do (Milwaukee Rep); Thomas Bradshaw’s Mary (The Goodman Theatre) and The Bereaved (Partial Comfort Productions); Tommy Smith’s The Wife (Access Theatre). She recently directed David Henry Hwang’s The Dance and the Railroad at Signature Theatre and the Wuzhen International Theatre Festival in China, and Katori Hall’s The Mountaintop at Milwaukee Repertory Theatre.  She is a Drama League Directing Fellow, Women's Project Lab Director, SoHo Rep Writers/Directors Lab and NYTW directing fellow, and a recipient of the TCG New Generations Grant, Denham Fellowship and Paul Green Directing Award. She proudly serves as an Associate Artist at Milwaukee Repertory Theatre. She is a former Director of On-Site Programs at the Lark Play Development Center and Artistic Associate at The Public Theatre. MFA, Yale School of Drama.  She has directed and taught at NYU, Bard College, Juilliard and Fordham University.  She is currently on faculty at the Yale School of Drama. 

ANNE KAUFFMANAnne is a New York based free-lance director focused on new work. She is a founding member of The Civilians. With the Civilians: THE LADIES by Anne Washburn (Cherry Lane, Dixon Place, Chashama),  MAPLE AND VINE by Jordan Harrison (Humana Festival and Playwrights Horizons) and YOU BETTER SIT DOWN: TALES FROM MY PARENTS’ DIVORCE (Williamstown, ArtsEmerson and The Flea). Recent work includes: YOU GOT OLDER with P73 at HERE, SMOKEFALL at the Goodman Theater and South Coast Rep, YOUR MOTHER’S COPY OF THE KAMA SUTRA and DETROIT at Playwrights Horizons, 100 DAYS at Z Space in San Francisco (TBA Best New Musical), BELLEVILLE at New York Theater Workshop, Yale Rep and Steppenwolf (Lortel Nomination), CHEROKEE at the Wilma Theater, Other work includes GOD’S EAR and SOMEWHERE FUN at the Vineyard Theater, THIS WIDE NIGHT with Naked Angels (Lortel Nomination), STUNNING at Woolly Mammoth and LCT3, and SLOWGIRL at LCT3. She is a Sundance Program Associate, a member of Soho Rep’s Artistic Council, a Drama League alum, and an Associate Artist with Clubbed Thumb and New Georges. From 2000-2006, Anne was on the directing faculty at NYU. She is a recipient of an Obie Award, the Joan and Joseph Cullman Award for Exceptional Creativity from Lincoln Center; Lilly Award, the Alan Schneider Director Award, and three Barrymore Awards for Direction.

LONNY PRICE: Lonny was most recently represented on Broadway with his direction for LADY DAY AT EMERSON’S BAR AND GRILL starring Audra McDonald. Last season he directed Emma Thompson and Bryn Terfel in the New York Philharmonic stage and television productions of SWEENEY TODD. On Broadway he directed Audra McDonald in 110 in the Shade , Danny Glover in Athol Fugard’s ‘Master Harold’ ... and the Boys; Joan Rivers in Sally Marr and Her Escorts (which he co- wrote with Ms. Rivers and Erin Sanders); Jenn Colella in Urban Cowboy; and himself in A Class Act, for which he also co-wrote the book (with Linda Kline) and was nominated for a Tony Award. Some of Lonny Price’s Off-Broadway directorial work includes Visiting Mr. Green, starring Eli Wallach; Beautiful Girls, starring Zoe Caldwell; Jules Feiffer’s Grown Ups, Athol Fugard’s Valley Song, and Mary Pat Gleason’s Stopping Traffic, for the Vineyard Theatre. He made his opera directing debut at the Houston Grand Opera directing Audra McDonald in Poulenc’s La Voix Humaine and Michael John LaChiusa’s Send. Other recent productions include Stephen Sondheim’s Company (starring Neil Patrick Harris, Stephen Colbert, Jon Cryer, Patti LuPone), Sondheim: The Birthday Concert, for which he received the 2011 Emmy Award,  Candide, starring Kristin Chenoweth (Emmy nomination), and an earlier version of Sweeney Todd, starring Patti LuPone and George Hearn for which he won an Emmy. Mr. Price also directed the Emmy Award–winning production of Sondheim’s Passion, starring Ms. LuPone, Audra McDonald, and Michael Cerveris for Lincoln Center’s Songbook series. His first feature film, ‘Master Harold’ ... and the Boys, (starring Freddie Highmore and Ving Rhames), received the 2011 Best Drama Award at the New York International Film and Video Festival, as well as Lonny receiving a Best Director of a Drama award.
