What's next in our Black Arts in America programming? The return of NC poet laureate Jaki Shelton Green

That's right! Jaki returns this weekend for a reading (Poetry of Witness) on October 29 at 7:00 pm at Global Education Center. She also will offer an extended version of her insightful and popular workshop, Curating Our Human Museums, on Saturday, October 30 from 10 am until 1 pm with a brunch catered by Mama Blanche. Reading is free, although donations are always accepted with love and gratitude. Workshop and brunch is $50 ($40 for Global members). Register for workshop here.

Jaki will be holding a workshop for custodial grandmothers at Edgehill United Methodist Church on Friday, October 29 at 11:30 am which will include lunch. If you know of someone who might be interested, please reach out and we will send additional information.

Musica Nueva December 4

Finally, after many postponements due to the pandemic, Intersection and Global Education Center are excited to announce that the premiere of Sonatas de la Meditacion, a concerto by Leo Brouwer for Carlos Barbosa-Lima will happen on December 4 at 7:30 pm at Father Ryan High School Center for the Arts. Musicians from Intersection and drummers, dancers and capoeiristas from Global Education Center will be joined by guest artists Carlos Barbosa-Lima and João Luiz for this long-awaited event. and the last film of 2021 as part of Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers, a program of South Arts in partnershiph with National Endowment for the Arts presented in partnership with Fisk University.

After a 75 year-old immigrant mother gets fired from her job as a hotel housekeeper, her son takes her on a bucket-list adventure to reclaim her life. As she struggles to find work, he documents a journey that uncovers the betrayals plaguing her past and the economic insecurity shaping not only her future, but that of an entire generation.
