Get Ready: Reframing Resources for a Range of Topics
The goal of the National Reframing Initiative is to build public understanding and support for the broader human service sector. We know through the FrameWorks Institute’s extensive research that the Building Well-Being Narrative achieves this by helping people see the societal benefits of the sector’s collective work across the lifespan, from advocacy and research, to the full range of prevention and intervention programs that human service organizations provide.

In addition to reframing the conversation around human services as a whole, there is a pressing need to more effectively engage the public and policymakers on specific issues and topics within the sector. In a recent newsletter, 7 Reframes for 2017, FrameWorks Institute highlighted the reframed narratives and resources that are ready to go for seven issue areas, all of which are relevant to human services. As is the case with the Building Well-Being Narrative, FrameWorks’ recommendations on the issues included in their newsletter were rigorously tested and proven to be effective at building public support.
We recommend that you check out 7 Reframes for 2017, bookmark it, and refer back to it when you develop messages on the following issues: criminal justice; affordable housing; education; budget & taxes; parenting; aging; and of course, human services.
This week, the spotlight lands on one of the many great resources included in the Building a New Narrative on Human Services Toolkit: the sample legislative testimony. The piece frames testimony on human services funding within a county budget using the Building Well-Being Narrative, along with additional framing elements, such as tone and order. We think this resource is especially timely as advocates make the case for funding in federal, state, and local budgets.

The National Reframing Initiative team kicked off our 2017 mobilization efforts with presentations conducted for the networks of two of our key partners in this initiative, Illinois Partners for Human Service and Volunteers of America.
  • The Quad Cities Open Network in Moline, Illinois hosted its second annual Action Forum with elected officials and public and nonprofit leaders. We had a lively conversation about the urgent need to change the narrative in Illinois.
  • Volunteers of America hosted a webinar for its members to drum up interest in and support for the new frame for human services and to direct attendees to our reframing workshop at its national conference in April.
If you’re interested in bringing a reframing presentation, workshop, or webinar to your network, contact Ilsa Flanagan, Director of the National Reframing Initiative, for details.
We have a robust set of free tools to better equip you integrating this new narrative into your communications strategies.
