Darius Butler ’24 Chosen for Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship

Darius Butler ’24, an Africana studies and law and society double major, is driven by his desire to make an impact in the lives of others. Now completing his third year at Oberlin, Butler is one of 12 U.S. college students selected to take part in the Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship. The program will take him to Washington, D.C.; Cape Town, South Africa; and Dublin, Ireland, to learn from the legacies of social justice giants who made global footprints.

Oberlin Places 161 Student-Athletes on NCAC Academic Honor-Roll

A total of 161 Oberlin College student-athletes were named to the North Coast Athletic Conference Academic Honor Roll.

To be honored, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore on an active roster in a sport sponsored by the conference and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or higher.

Campus Solar Fields Maintained by Truckloads of Hungry Livestock

Roughly 70 sheep were delivered to the fenced land north of campus that contains Oberlin's 2.7 megawatt solar array. In June, they grazed, munched, and stomped grass in a move aimed at alleviating the need for costly and painstaking mowing of the site. Click the photo to watch the sheep in action!

Additional sheep drops will bring the total number of grazers to between 150 and 200 over the course of the year. The sheep will be delivered to the 10-acre field three times—in spring, summer, and fall.

Oberlin Researchers Part of Breakthrough Study on Gravitational Waves

It’s official: Obies—and their research—are out of this world. Physics and astronomy students spanning the past 15 years—a roster of nearly 50 undergraduate researchers and their faculty mentors—played roles in a study on gravitational waves that's received coverage from NPR, The Guardian, and the New York Times. This study uncovered galaxy-sized evidence of Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity in action. Scientists believe that the waves detected may be caused by the movement of massive black holes—bodies as large as the distance between the earth and sun.

Friends of the Libraries Alumni Scholarships

Do you know or are you an Obie grad considering graduate studies in librarianship or archives? If so, the Friends of the Library offers two scholarships ($4,000 each) for Oberlin graduates who are pursuing graduate studies in librarianship or archives. Check out the Friends of the Oberlin College Libraries Graduate Library School Scholarships for 2023 for details. Applications are due July 15.

Heisman Club’s 2023 Hall of Honor Class

The Heisman Club officially welcomed 10 people into its Hall of Honor during the College's Commencement & Reunion Weekend.

The prestigious honor was awarded to the founding members of the Black Student-Athlete Group (BSAG), former lacrosse player Jerry Greenfield ’73, the legendary coach, administrator, and Olympic hero Tommie Smith, the originator of the track and field cross country programs Lisa Matovcik ’76, and the founder of the men's soccer program George Wilbond.

Dewi Beer’s Love of Teaching and Language Converges in a Fulbright Award

At Oberlin, Dewi Beer ’23 developed twin passions for teaching and studying Mandarin. Now the spring graduate, who completed majors in economics and East Asian studies and an integrative concentration in education studies, will examine effective education systems and dive deeper into her language studies as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Yulin, Taiwan.

Elizabeth Barajas-Román ’99 Elected as Alumni Trustee

Earlier this month, the Oberlin College Board of Trustees certified the results of the 2023 alumni trustee election. Elizabeth Barajas-Román ’99 will begin serving her full term of four years beginning July 1, 2023.

Honorary Degree Recipient and Tony Award-Winning Lighting Designer Natasha Katz ’81 First Found Her Spark at Oberlin

Natasha Katz ’81, Tony Award-winning lighting designer, received an honorary doctorate of fine arts at Oberlin’s 2023 commencement ceremony. Over the course of her career, Katz has designed the lighting for more than 60 Broadway productions. After developing a passion for Broadway at an early age, Katz was introduced to Oberlin's theater department in a History of Western Theatre class that opened her eyes to the work behind the spectacles that had dazzled her as a youth.

Professor of East Asian Studies Sheila Miyoshi Jager published "Korea, the Kingmaker" based on her recent book, The Other Great Game: The Opening of Korea and the Birth of Modern East Asia, in the July 2023 issue of the British magazine, History Today.
Francis D Federighi Professor in Natural Sciences and Professor of Physics Yumi Ijiri has coauthored an article with Oberlin graduate Alex Yu ’23 in the Journal of Alloys and Compounds, titled "Structural and magnetic properties of magnetostrictive Fe-Ga-Zr nanocrystalline alloy." The work was done in collaboration with researchers at Case Western Reserve University and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
Associate Professor of Art History Matthew Rarey was interviewed by host Rick Jackson on WKSU's The Sound of Ideas on May 25. He discussed his new book, Insignificant Things: Amulets and the Art of Survival in the Early Black Atlantic, and the wider history of art, enslavement, and religious practices in eighteenth-century West Africa, Brazil, and Portugal.
Associate Professor of Physics and Astronomy Jillian Scudder published an article in Nautilus summarizing a new paper discussing the youth of Saturn's rings - "Saturn's Rings Could Be Younger Than Flowers."
